- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I smile, leaving the device hidden away. I don’t need any taunting or teasing from the surrounding assholes who think they’re better than everyone else just because they went to Harvard fucking Law.
Big deal.
These people aren’t my friends. I dislike a lot of them, hating the frat boy atmosphere that always develops when we’re altogether. They’re smart, though, dropping the stupid shit before Wallace or one of the other partners sees.
The men sniff out any signs of weakness, rejoicing when they find a way to catapult themselves to the top of the employee list, not caring who they damage in the process.
There won’t be any congratulations tossed my way when the announcement is made. No one will wish me luck. They’ll all be plotting ways to expose some dark secret of mine, wanting the position for themselves.
Selfish bastards.
My phone buzzes again, and my smile grows. I smile a lot more often these days, and I know RB is the source of this newfound excitement. We haven’t spoken since yesterday’s confessional, and I feel guilty.
I didn’t intend to push as far as I did, sharing the thoughts that have formed in the dark corner of my mind. They’re out there now, and I can’t take them back.
I don’t think I would if I could.
There are only hours until we meet. Friday and Saturday are going to crawl by, cruelly mocking me as I wait patiently to meet the woman who’s rocked my world.
God, I can’t wait to answer her in a few minutes.
A jarring laugh from the man to my right causes me to blink, focus returning to the scattered papers taking over my spot at the table and away from the hole burning in my pocket.
“Take Emma for example. She spends more time here than anyone else. There’s no way she’s getting laid.” Brad, one of my unfortunate colleagues, smirks.
A smatter of dull laugher accompanies the comment, the rambunctious amusement from seconds ago quieting. Only a festering pool of ugly testosterone occupies the room. While we have a few other female employees at the firm, Emma is the lone woman attorney. Our lack of diversity has always pissed me off. The majority of the employees are straight, white men who are so out of touch with reality and today’s world it hurts. If I get the partner spot, adding someone other than a person who looks like me is the top priority.
Fucking bullshit.
“Dude, come on. She’ll be here in a minute.”
