  89. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

It definitely put me in a better mood. Her sucking my dick and smiling up at me with a mouthful of my cum helped me forget the stress from earlier in the day. It’s amazing what an orgasm or two can do. I was so blissed out when I woke up this morning—alone of course—like I had returned from a lengthy yoga retreat, good as new.

“Uh oh,” Jack says. “He’s got that look.”

“Just daydreaming about blindfolds. Anyway, these suggestions have been helpful. I’m really fucking excited for this opportunity, and I don’t want to mess anything up.”

“Hooking up with your coworker would definitely mess it up,” Neil warns me. “So don’t get any ideas.”

I roll my eyes. “I do know how to keep my dick in my pants, believe it or not. No one is hooking up with anybody. Why is it so hard to think I don’t possess any sort of feelings for Emma?”

“Because we know you. And you like everyone.”

“Yeah, well, I don’t like her,” I say quickly, sipping my drink.

Something rumbles in my chest at the statement, like a beast clawing to get free. My hand becomes sweaty, nearly losing its grip on my glass. The sensation is almost debilitating, its motive for arrival untraceable.

I don’t like her, I repeat to myself, hoping it sounds more emphatic this time around.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Jack watching me, his lips pursing together like he’s seconds away from calling me out. Dipping my chin, I shake my head. It would do me good to focus on this potential promotion and not Emma.

For some reason, I can’t get her out of my fucking mind.

And I don’t hate it as much as I should.

FOUR

EMMA

It’s Friday and I’m in love.

This week has utterly drained me. My mental battery is depleted and in desperate need of a recharge. My body aches, muscles I didn’t even know existed throb painfully, screaming at me to go to the gym and use them so they aren’t overexerted and underworked. My eyes hurt from staring at computer screens, straining and squinting to dampen the blue light shining in my face for hours on end. Reading glasses do nothing to help, either.

In the eight days since Wallace shared the partner news, I’ve let work consume my life more than it already does. I’m knocking out my to-do list more swiftly and effectively than ever before. I kind of feel like Wonder Woman. Badass. Heroic. Ready to exhaustedly take on the world.

The backlog of cases and files I need to get through is rapidly dwindling, and, at this rate, I won’t know what to do with my twelve-hour shifts soon. I might have a second to actually breathe.
