  89. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I gnaw on my lip, weighing his proposition. There’s a sense of accomplishment in paying off the final number myself. It’s a goal I’ve been chipping away at, and I’d like to see it through.

“Can I think about it? I’m not saying no. I want to table it until we get home and I can look at my spreadsheets.”

He kisses my bare shoulder. “I’ll accept your motion to table it. It’s selfish of me, but I can’t imagine you going to events with other men when we get home. I realize that might make me sound possessive and controlling, and please know I would never dictate how you go about your life or expect you to make decisions on my behalf. But I’m in too deep to sit back and watch you touch another man, Emma. Or let them touch you.”

“Is someone jealous?”

“Yeah, I guess I am. I never thought I’d see the day.”

“There isn’t anyone else, Henry. Just you. Only you.”

“Thank fuck for that,” he exclaims, flipping me onto my back and pinning my arms above my head. He spends the next hours giving me all his attention, and I secretly revel in his jealousy as he worships me again and again, the morning light beginning to brighten the room around us until sleep becomes a thing of the past.

THIRTY-SIX

HENRY

Getting to spend so much time with my family—Emma included—has been bittersweet. I don’t get home as much as I should, and this long weekend was a reminder I need to make more of an effort when it comes to seeing my loved ones. During the farewell brunch with a small cluster of close family and friends, I marveled at Emma helping GJ pour a glass of orange juice. Assisting my niece in cutting her pancakes. Laughing with Lizzie and my mom, bright, boisterous chuckles passing over the table as the women giggled over something secretive. When I asked what was so funny, I got three matching eye rolls.

As much as I loved the tight-knit atmosphere of the past few days, I’m eager to get back to the city, and begin to attempt to navigate this new reality between the blonde sleeping peacefully in the passenger seat beside me. My life has changed exponentially in the last few weeks, all thanks to Emma.

No one has challenged me like her. She fights back. She’s fiery and passionate. Cute and sweet. Funny and charming while also being dynamic and headstrong. She’s shifted my entire world. Altered my reality. Made the world a smidge brighter. As stupid as it sounds, I truly don’t know what I was doing before her. Fucking around and enjoying a different woman each night? Forgetting their name while they were blowing me, confusing them with someone from last week?

Why?
