  89. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

We’ve both been so absorbed with our careers, and I know Emma wanted to become completely comfortable in her role before taking on stresses and responsibilities like planning a wedding. The other night we were sitting on the couch, reading our books and enjoying the rainstorm happening outside. I looked over at her when she giggled at her book and knew it was time. A flip switched, telling me she was ready. I was ready, too.

Emma gives me a glance before shuffling to the desk. I know what’s inside. A ring sitting on a pile of sunflower petals. It’s sparkly enough to be dazzling, while not being garish or obnoxious. I drop to my knee, waiting patiently. Her body trembles as she picks up the box and turns to face me.

“Do you remember when you asked me if I believe in marriage?”

“Yes.” Her voice is barely above a whisper.

“I said three things: If I ever found a woman who makes me laugh, loves me for my stubbornness, and makes me grin when she walks into a room, I wouldn’t be opposed to the idea. You check all the boxes, baby girl. I know you hate clichés. Proposing to you after suggesting we start our own law firm? It’s like the epilogue of one of your romance novels, and for that, I apologize. I just couldn’t wait any longer.”

“I forgive you,” she whispers, tears forming in her beautiful blue eyes.

Don’t cry, honey.

“Emma.” I stare at the carpet, my own eyes filling with tears. “Shit. No one told me it would be this hard. I thought those assholes were exaggerating, but nope. This is painful.”

“Hey.” She kneels in front of me. “I don’t need a speech.”
