  89. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The room isn’t mind-boggling, slightly smaller than where Emma is now but still plenty large to have a decent number of employees. Floor-to-ceiling windows cover the far wall, and beige carpet stretches across the entire space.

“I love the windows,” she says, and I beam. I thought of her instantly when I saw them.

“There’s something else I want you to see. Go check out what’s behind that door.” I gesture to a room off to the side. Emma hurries over, pushing open the door and walking inside. I follow leisurely behind, letting her take a minute on her own. A large desk sits in the center, the same windows echoed in here, natural light bathing the room in warmth and brightness. “This is your office.”

“Mine?” she breathes out. “It’s massive.”

“A throne room fit for a queen with plenty of space for your plants. C’mere. Let’s talk about names.” My arms snake around her waist as we look out the window. “Burns and Dawson.”

“No way. Dawson and Burns sounds better.”

“I don’t care if it sounds better. You’re first. Always.”

“I’m glad your bedroom practices trickle over to your professional tendencies, too.”

I drop my chin to her shoulder. “What if we amended it to something else? Something more dramatic? With more flair?”

“Like what? Dawbu? Buson?”

“Those aren’t even words, weirdo. What did you get on your LSAT again?”

“A higher score than you,” she retorts, and I give her ass a light smack.

“Touché. What about… Burns-Dawson and Dawson? I like Dawson and Dawson, but I’d be a fool to think you’d surrender your name for anyone. And I’d never ask you to.”

Spinning in my hold, she gazes up at me with wide, surprised eyes. “Henry…”

“Look in the desk drawer,” I say, jutting my chin toward the lone piece of furniture.

“What? Why?”

“Just do it, baby.”

We’ve talked about the future in great detail. It’s obvious we love each other fiercely and know we’re going to spend the rest of our lives together. We’ve been in no rush to commit to the plans, though, enjoying our relationship without a rigid timeline.

I bought the damn ring after only two months together, that’s how sure I am about her. Nicole and I spent hours at the mall sifting through diamond options to find the one that was perfectly Emma. There was never a doubt in my mind about what eventually happens next.
