  89. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“We’ll talk about this with the guys. I can’t look at you right now.” He storms out of the elevator with me hot on his heels. He doesn’t speak another word and I trail behind him on the sidewalk, following him into a crappy bar.

Noah walks to a booth in the back corner, taking one side. I mimic him and fiddle with the paper coaster, wishing I could disappear.

“Can I get you boys something?” The smiling waitress stands with her hand on her hip.

“Shots, please,” I mumble, handing her my credit card. “And a beer.”

“Could you guys be in a weirder spot? When I left the school I was expecting us to at least be at a place where we could order food without getting food poisoning,” Patrick jokes, joining us in the booth and scooting next to me.

“I didn’t pick this stupid place,” I grumble, crossing my arms over my chest. “I was coerced here.”

“You don’t get a lot of say right now,” Noah retorts.

“Whoa, what did I miss?” Patrick asks, trying to decide if fists are about to be thrown. Noah ignores the question, gesturing to the door.

“Jack and Neil are here.”

The final two join us as the waitress brings a tray of shot glasses back.

“I need to get blackout wasted. Maybe that will help me feel something.” I grab a glass, throwing the alcohol back without blinking. It burns down my throat, and I welcome the pain.

“I’m confused. Is that why you gathered all of us here?” Neil asks, frowning. “To drink?”

“Yes,” I say, throwing back another shot, ignoring Noah’s glare. “And I need to talk to you all, apparently.”

“Okay, let’s slow down,” Patrick says kindly, moving the tray out of my reach. “Why don’t you tell us what’s going on, H?”

“I messed up,” I mumble, staring at the table. A scoff from Noah’s side of the table reaches my ears and I want to kick him in the shins. “I messed up so bad, and I don’t think I can fix it.”

“How?” Jack asks carefully.

“Everyone remembers Friday night, right? When I introduced you all to Emma?”

“Yeah. We had a great time. Jo thinks she’s awesome.”

“Rebecca loved her.”

“Lola asked for her phone number so they can plan a girls night.”

“Well, I… I went too far with Shelby at the bar when Emma was in the bathroom.”

“Henry. You didn’t—”
