  89. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“For once in your goddamn life you’re going to open up to us and tell us what the hell is going on that’s making you unable to complete a sentence. You’re going to be serious and have an honest conversation with your best friends, because if you’re hurting, we want to hurt too, you stupid asshole. You have feelings and emotions and it’s time you confront and share them. I’m sick of hearing shit from other people. Let’s fucking go.”

His orders jostle me awake and I turn off my computer monitors and grab my cell phone and bag as quickly as possible. I flick the light off as we walk down the hall, silence nudging its way between us. Noah doesn’t speak, and when I sneak a look at him, his jaw is tense and his arms are crossed.

“Are you mad at me?” I ask, reluctant to know the answer. He wouldn’t lie if he was pissed off. A blessing and a curse to have such a blunt and truthful best friend. The elevator doors open and we file inside.

“Henry, I’ve known you a long time.”

“Okay…”

“And in that time, you’ve done some questionable things. Things I haven’t commented on because it’s your life, and you’re free to live it how you want.”

“What does that have to do with an—”

“You hurt her, man,” he exclaims, glaring at me. I’ve never heard him this loud before, and I’m afraid he’s going to slam me against the wall. “You know I love you, and you know I’m always going to be upfront with you and help you when I can. What you did is unacceptable. This isn’t a game. Emma isn’t another notch in your fucking belt. She’s a great girl and you fucked up. Big time.”

My nostrils flare, anger and envy pounding in my skull. Emma’s talked to him and not me?

“Do you think you could do a better job than me? Are you going to jump in and be the hero that mends her broken heart? Here comes Noah, the guy that will give flowers and forevers instead of quick fucks.”

“Oh, drop that shit. She’s been yours since high school and I would never. You’re just too big of a fucking idiot to notice, but maybe now you’ll get your head out of your pretentious ass and do something about it. I think if I was with the woman I waited a long time for, I wouldn’t go around touching other people. I don’t give a fuck what you think.”

I stumble back. “Are you serious?”
