- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Turning onto the brick driveway, the long expanse of red disappears in front of us, behind tall trees. I punch in the gate code and the squeaky metal creaks open. Sneaking a look over at Emma, I find her mouth agape, taking in the monstrosity of our home and land. From an outsider’s perspective, it’s definitely opulent and gaudy. Large columns flank a wrap-around porch, appearing more like a hotel complex than a single-family residence. Inside, though, hidden from passing cars, is a place full of memories. Of joyous moments, worn hardwood floors, years of laughter, and photos lining old walls.
“Wow. This is your house? It’s incredible!”
“Born and raised,” I answer, stopping at the top of the driveway and parking the car. “Before we go in, I want to tell you something.”
“What’s up?”
“I know this is going to be overwhelming. I’m not discrediting you, because I know you’ve done things like this before. You’re a professional. This isn’t new. What is new is us being here for multiple days without an escape. At the end of the night, you don’t get to go home. You don’t get to stop pretending. You don’t get to drop the facade. You’re stuck here, being on all the time. If you need a breather, a minute alone, or Christ, a nap and a snack, please tell me. I don’t want you to feel obligated to do things. If you need anything at all, say the word and we’ll temporarily remove ourselves from the situation. Got it?”
Her eyes search my face and I let her. I let her see I’m laying all my cards on the table. I let her see my nerves and anxiousness. I let her see the fear and worry I have that she’s going to stretch herself thin. I let her see the way I want to pull her into my lap, hug her tight, and thank her for standing by my side.
“I got it,” she agrees, giving my arm a squeeze. “Thank you for being so considerate.”
“Don’t thank me yet. The fun’s only beginning, my friend.” I cut the ignition and jump out of the car. After helping her to the ground, I hand her the bottle of wine and flowers before unloading our suitcases.
“Ready?”
“I’m ready.” Emma laces her free hand through mine.
I anticipated it gesture the whole solitary drive, wondering if she would initiate any PDA, and I wasn’t prepared for the outcome.
I suck in a breath at the contact of our palms pressed together.
Sparks of lust and fire are climbing up my arm, clawing at my skin, wanting to consume and possess not only me but also her. I’ve touched plenty of women, but it’s never been like this.
