Rose stirred in my arms, and I quickly started walking back and forth. I felt Kelsey’s stare, looking up to see her with tears in her eyes.
“You look good with a baby,” she said before taking a bite of something. “Jane practically came from seeing you guys all huddled around Rose.”
Nate laughed while Aiden shook his head.
“I could feel the hormones going crazy,” Nate said, sitting down. “She was ready to pounce at a moment’s notice.”
I shook my head. “I think you all would be great dads.” Kelsey said with her mouth full.
Nate smiled, but Aiden looked like he had his heart ripped out and I knew it was from his brush with almost being a dad. I fucking hated that he had to deal with that.
“Well, don’t hold your breath.” I said.
“Oh, I think if you guys played your cards right, you could have an amazing relationship with Jane, and she would definitely have your babies.” Kelsey wiped her mouth. “She deserves all the happiness in the world after losing her family. I know you said you were going to pursue her. Please really think about it because after seeing the longing she had on her face after I gave birth to Rose, I’d hate to see that face again because of you guys.”
Aiden, Nate and I looked at each other and I knew we were all in the same boat, but even with our doubts, I knew we wanted Jane and were going to make sure she was the happiest person in Mountain View, hell, the Earth. If she wanted to have kids, then well…. I wasn’t so opposed to it anymore.
* * *
We spent the rest of the early morning taking turns holding Rose in between feedings to let my sister rest. We were all a little awkward with her, but I think we all got the hang of it, or at least the best we could. Nathan seemed the most natural of us and I remembered his comment about wanting to have kids. He murmured things to her, kissing her forehead. Seeing Kelsey become a mom was something I didn’t think I could get pride from, but I was very proud of her. Jane popped in after her shift to make sure we all were doing fine. She kept her distance this time, but the sadness in her eyes looked less haunting.
“Go,” Kelsey said after Jane left the room. “She needs you.”
“Kelsey...”
“I’m serious, Cal,” she stuffed her mouth with a waffle from a nearby diner. “I’m here for another day and the nurse said I can use the nursery if I need a break.”
