“Doc, I have a pregnant woman coming in. She’s contracting seven minutes and lasting forty-five seconds,” I told our ER doctor, Eric.

“Call L&D. They can come and get her.” He didn’t even look up from his paperwork.

“They aren’t answering,” I said, getting frustrated with him. Sometimes Eric could be so fucking lazy and it drove me mad.

“Jane!” someone yelled on the phone.

“Call L&D again.” I shoved the phone into Eric’s chest as I walked out to the Emergency waiting room to the front door.

“Son of a bitch!” Callum was helping Kelsey out of the car as she doubled over in pain. “Cal, I can’t do this,” she cried, as I walked up.

“Kelsey,” I said, holding on to her hand and helping Callum hold her up.

“Kel, you got this,” Callum looked up at me with fear in his eyes. This big brooding man was scared shitless and that tugged at my heartstrings more than I thought it would.

“Come on, let’s get you up to Labor and Delivery. Can you walk?” I brushed the hair out of her face.

“I think so, but they are coming quickly now.” She was panting.

“Ok, let’s go through these doors and we can get you to an elevator to take us up.” I rubbed her back as I threw her arm around my shoulder to help her walk.

“I’m going to go park the car,” Aiden said.

“I have her bags,” Nathan said, as he followed us.

“No, no, no…” Kelsey doubled over in pain. I leaned over to make sure she didn’t fall over when I noticed water trickling on the floor.

“Uh…why is there water…”

“Oh my god, did my water break?” Kelsey sounded panicked.

“What does that mean?” Callum looked alarmed.

“It’s normal guys. We just gotta get her inside. Nathan, go inside and ask for a wheelchair. Tell Brenda that Jane asked for it,” I said, making sure her water was clear. “We will wait here.”

He rushed in front of us, and I noticed he was carrying three bags with a whole bunch of stuff.

“That’s a lot of stuff, Kelsey,” I chuckled.

“I wasn’t ready, so we all just stuffed what we thought I would need.” She groaned, leaning over again as she rode out another contraction. I felt like she just had one, not even a few minutes ago. An alarm sounded in me, knowing she was getting really close.

“Deep breaths, Kel, you got this. Just remember, at the end of this you’ll get to hold your baby.” Callum murmured as he rubbed Kelsey’s back.

My chest tightened at the tenderness.

“What the fuck are you guys still doing here?” Aiden looked horrified.

I laughed. “We are fine. Nathan went to get a wheelchair. Her water broke.”
