“Wouldn’t you be pissed too?” Nate said. “This is all new for her. This is probably the first dating experience she’s had since her husband and who knows how long she’s been out of the dating pool. That order is the bare minimum she deserves. We were her first friends here and the first guys she slept with, and what do we do? We ignore her and leave her to deal with shit by herself.”
“Fuck, could you make it sound any worse?” Cal asked. “I know she should be mad at us, but it still doesn’t help my…”
“Insecurities?” Nate finished for Cal.
I knew he hit the nail on the head, Cal knew it too. We spent the rest of the drive in silence again. If you had told me five years ago that we’d be all out of sorts for a woman, then I would have laughed at you. Shit, even a year ago, I wouldn’t have believed it. Cal pulled up in the driveway of our home.
Cal put the car in park and the shrill of a phone ring broke the silence. Cal pulled his phone out of his pocket, answering as he got out of the car.
“Hello,” he said.
I opened my car door, and went to the back of the Bronco getting our backpacks out. Nate picked up two bags as Cal opened the door. We followed him inside.
“Yeah man, I don’t mind.” Cal said, walking to the kitchen. “We can pick it up in Monroe. It will be cheaper to ship.”
I laid the bags down by the door. “You know who that is?”
“No clue, man,” Nate said, taking the food out of the bags and going through them before putting them up. I did the same with the other bags, occasionally hearing Cal.
“Yeah man, no problem. Don’t worry, I’ll let her know.” He walked to us, smiling. “Yeah, call me if you need anything else. I know she can be stubborn. Ok, bye.”
“Who the hell is that, and why are you smiling like an idiot?” Nate asked, standing up.
“That was Jane’s brother, and he needs help with some stuff they are shipping for the wedding.” He looked excited.
“And?” I asked, not getting his excitement.
“When we were in Dallas, she offered her home as a place for him and his fiancée to have their wedding. He needs help with a few things they are having shipped and they get here on Monday.”
“This is our chance to be close to her, spend more time with her,” Nate said, getting excited too.
I laughed. “Jesus, what is this woman doing to us?”
“She’s making us better. We’ve been taking the scenic route for too long.” Callum shrugged. He picked up the food we pulled from the backpacks and left for the kitchen.
