I felt guilty all over again. “Jane, just wait for us. We can walk you back.” I stood up, walking to her, hearing the guys do the same, but picking up instead.

“I’m fine,” she whispered, quickly stuffing everything into her bag. I picked up a water bottle that ran away, along with a few other items, and handed them to her. She grabbed them roughly, putting them in her bag. “Thanks,” she mumbled.

“We are ready.” Nate handed my bag to me.

“I don’t need an escort. I can get to my car just fine.” She was trying to zip up her bag, getting it stuck on different things. I picked up the bag, zipping it up slowly and pulling it through one arm to carry it for her. I started walking, not giving her a choice.

“Aiden,” Jane sighed as she walked behind me.

“Please, we don’t have to talk. Just let us walk you back to your car.” I didn’t slow down, not wanting to give her a chance to pull away more.

I heard her mutter something as she continued to follow me. The walk back was a little awkward, but I was grateful for the silence. It allowed me to replay everything in my head. The closer we got to the cars, the more guilty I felt. We broke her trust, and I knew better than to do that. In the marines we worked with trust, if we couldn’t rely on our team, then good luck surviving. Callum, Nathan and I trusted each other to do what needed to be done, no matter what. That’s why we lived so well together. These past two weeks we had been in shambles, our normally stable relationship was still rocky since that dreadful day. We lost our trust in each other and with Jane.

The cars came into view, and I didn’t like how we were leaving everything. I walked up to the driver’s side of Jane’s car, feeling her follow silently, but I turned around just to make sure she was behind me. I nodded at Callum and he got the hint. He pushed Nate to the Bronco, giving Jane and me some space.

I stood next to the door, waiting for Jane to unlock the car. “I don’t need help getting into my car.” Jane’s voice sounded tired.

“I know, you’re capable because you already do so much by yourself,” I said, getting a raised brow from Jane like she was suspicious of me.

“Ok.” She unlocked the car, opening the door and holding out her hand for her bag. I took it off my shoulder and threw it in the car.
