I quickly hid them from view like a child who was about to get scolded. “Uh… Yeah, just a little slip.”

“Doesn’t look like a little slip.” Aiden’s deep voice brought color to my cheeks. “Come on, I can patch you up at the falls.”

“Uh, I was just leaving,” I said, feeling like a chicken, but the sight of Aiden’s crestfallen expression felt like a punch to the gut.

“Come on, Jane.” Callum walked up to me. “Your tracks looked like they were going in the same direction as us except that small circle you seemed to make back there by the fallen tree.”

“How?” I said, shocked that he could tell my minor mishap.

He grinned. “I saw Darcy’s car, and I figured it had to be you. I also remember telling you if you saw something twice to put a marker, so you knew it was the same mark.” I smiled as I remembered the small lesson he had given me the last time we came out here.

“I brought pastries and some snacks,” Nathan said, coming on the other side of me as they both guided me towards the direction of the falls.

“Guys,” I said, ready to leave. I was too emotional, and I came out here to figure shit out. I didn’t want to run into this situation head first.

“No pressure. We don’t even have to talk,” Nathan said, looking ahead. “Aiden can patch you up and you can leave, or we can take you back.”

I pursed my lips, feeling distracted by them as we walked towards the falls. This is why I needed to get my head clear. They distorted my judgment, making me think with my vagina instead of my head. I took a glance behind, seeing Aiden pulling up the rear. He was walking with his head down, but glanced up and caught my stare. He glanced away, making me feel bad even though I knew I shouldn’t. They started this. They broke us and what we could have been.

As we continued, I felt my knee stiffen the more we walked. We reached the falls as I felt my body desperately needing a break. I stopped to admire the water fall before the guys took off their gear. Cal removed my backpack, lifting me bridal style.

“I can walk.” I mumbled, secretly loving how he could pick me up like I weighed nothing.

“You were limping by the time we got here,” he said matter-of-factly. He gently sat me down on a rock. “I’ll take any reason to be near you, Jane.” His hazel eyes held a warmth I was starting to love. He wasn’t the grumpy guy I first met. He had thawed, and I loved to see him looking lighter, even though our circumstances had become complicated.
