I woke up gasping frantically, sitting up looking around the room for something familiar, shivering as the last of my dream lingered. It had been a while since I had dreamed of Henry, making me feel guilty instantly. I knew I would eventually move on, but the little voice in my head said that it was too soon. It didn’t matter that almost ten months had passed, how could I move on from almost six years together in a matter of months?
The ghost of him saying olive juice tugged at my heart. He always said that instead of I love you. He knew I loved the movie, The Other Sister, where it came from. I lied back down, realizing the sun was barely rising. Pink and golden light decorated my room, reminding me of the day I woke up with the guys after I had my breakdown. Dammit.
I missed them too. As much as I was trying to be smart about this entire situation, my heart didn’t care. It was as if Henry was a distant memory, and my heart was already looking for it’s next love. Wasn’t I supposed to have a couple of crappy hookups on tinder, or whatever app was popular before I jumped into a relationship? I mean, how would it work with three guys? Schedules? Rock, paper, scissors on who I slept with? Honestly, they looked like they were comfortable with each other and we would all sleep together.
Taking a deep breath, I tried to ease my racing mind. I didn’t need to be thinking about them until I had my coffee. Throwing the covers off, I got up and put on my robe on as I walked to the kitchen. Grateful for the next three days off, the house desperately needed to be cleaned, and I needed to get groceries. But being alone, I was afraid of what that would mean for my mind. I knew I would obsess over everything that had happened over the past month. Grabbing my kettle, I warmed up water for my French press. I looked out the kitchen window at the beautiful scenery outside my home.
I thought of the waterfall the guys and I had visited. It was so peaceful there, and I knew I needed that right now. As the kettle warmed, I went back to my room to change into a hiking outfit. I was going to go find that waterfall and see if it helped me clear my thoughts. As I came into my room, I heard my phone buzzing on the nightstand. It was Madie.
“Hello,” I answered excitedly. “Did you have the baby?!”
“She’s so precious, Jane.” Madie sounded like she was crying.
My lip trembled. “I’m sure she looks like an angel,” I said, as my voice cracked.
“She looks just like Jeanie. I can’t believe she’s finally here.” Madie sniffled.
