“You’re welcome.” He gave me a small smile that I loved so much.
“You look nice,” I said, feeling embarrassed because I knew I looked like crap. “Hot date?” I asked like an idiot. It was seven-thirty in the morning.
He looked amused. “I actually have a faculty meeting today at the local college.”
Fuck. Nathan looked like this while he taught? I’m sure all the girls went nuts for him. I bet most of them asked for extra credit even when they didn’t need it.
“Oh cool,” I said, trying my darndest to be eloquent. “What are you doing here?”
“I came for you,” he said, looking nervous. “I was wondering if I could take you out for breakfast, or maybe we could go hiking soon?”
He looked at me hopefully. I pursed my lips, dying to say yes, but I couldn’t. I was still mad about how they handled everything and even though Nathan was the one who hurt me the least, he still went along with it at the beginning.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea Nathan,” I said, hiking up my bags.
“I’m sorry I didn’t stand up for you or us. This whole situation is fucked up, but I don’t regret sleeping with you.” He ran a hand through his hair, messing it up and it made him look even more appealing. “I think of what I could have done differently or what the guys and I could have done differently. Can we just sit down and talk? I can explain it better.”
He looked heartbroken, and I almost caved. “I’m sorry. I can’t,” I said, turning around to walk to my car.
“Jane,” Nathan called out to me.
I felt a lump forming in my throat, making it hard to swallow. Praying he didn’t follow me, I walked to my car. I miss him; I miss them.
“Jane. Please,” Nathan pleaded as I got to my car.
I turned around, ready to tell him to leave me alone, but he was closer than I thought. He placed a hand above me on the car, leaning down as I looked up at him.
“Jane, you don’t have to say anything. Just let me do the talking. Please,” he said, sounding desperate. “Please.” He looked like he was in agony.
“Nathan,” I said, laying a hand on his firm chest. “I’m not ready. Please, just…”
“Are you ok there, Jane?” Someone interrupted me. I quickly took my hand away from his chest. Dr. Daniel was standing a few cars down, looking at Nathan suspiciously.
“She is fine.” Nathan’s clipped voice made me look up at him again. He was glaring at Daniel.
“Jane, are you ok?” Daniel asked again, not even paying attention to Nathan.
“Yeah, I’m fine Doc.” I smiled.
