Thankfully, I hadn’t given in and texted back, but I knew it wasn’t much longer till that happened. Every day, they sent me lunch with snacks, left notes on my car apologizing, and left a fresh flower on my car in hopes they could find out my favorite. Their attention was great, but what had changed? Did they change their mind just because Lucio showed interest? I wanted them to choose me because they wanted me, needed me and realized their mistake.

“You ok Jane?”

I looked up to see Doctor Daniel looking at me curiously.

“Uh yeah. Just spaced out thinking about things I need to get done today.” I smiled at him.

“It must be a lot of things,” he chuckled. “I said your name a few times before you responded.”

I blushed, feeling embarrassed. “It is.” Daniel was the first doctor I had worked with here at the ER. We’d grown comfortable working with each other, and he was the sweetest.

“Do you need any help before I leave?” He asked, taking his stethoscope off and laying it on the counter.

“I think I’m done. I’m just going to check on Beth before I leave,” I said, as I started organizing the desk.

I felt his stare for a moment before I looked up. “Have a good day, drive safely,” he said, looking like he had more to say. Instead, he smiled and walked away.

“Girl, get out of here.” Beth walked into the nurses’ station with her big mug of coffee.

“I’m going. I just wanted to make sure you didn’t need anything,” I replied, as I leaned against the desk.

“Nope, you work too hard, and you need to rest. Go.” She patted my arm as started looking over charts.

“Bye,” I said, walking toward the locker room to gather my things. I grabbed my bag, making my way out as I checked my phone again, waiting for that second text that usually came in. Pushing the door, I frowned at my expectation, thinking they could only text me so much before they gave up. Did I want them to stop trying?

“Jane?”

I shrieked, dropping my phone. I looked up to see Nathan sitting on a bench by the door we used to get into the hospital.

“Jesus, Nathan, give a girl some warning.” I clutched my chest, trying to slow my heart rate.

“Sorry,” he said sheepishly. He stood and leaned down to get my phone. He held it out to me. That’s when I noticed the glasses and his attire. Sweet baby Jesus, Nathan was a sight for sore eyes. Thick dark brown frames sat on his face, a dark blue button-down tucked into dark gray slacks with the sleeve rolled up and dark dress shoes finished his look. His hair was styled back, making him look dapper.

My face instantly felt hot. “Uh… Thanks.”
