“I heard you told Aiden she tried to kill herself when she was a teenager. She’s been to therapy, and honestly, I don’t think she would do anything to hurt herself, especially over us. You also can’t think she would do it just because Natalie tried more than once to kill herself. They are different and Jane is constantly working on herself.”

“I know I can’t lump them together, but my brain sometimes doesn’t see the difference.” He let his head fall forward.

I walked over to lay a hand on his shoulder. “She’s fine, and I think if she were to do anything, I honestly believe she would talk herself out of it. You’ve heard her. She is ready to move forward.”

“I know. I’m working on trying to believe her.”

“You ready?” Aiden walked into the kitchen with a small bag in hand.

“Yeah, I am,” Nathan said, standing up.

“You guys better hurry, so you have enough time to park and get to your gate,” I said, walking them out.

“If you need us…”

“Just go bring our girl home, I’ll be fine.” I interrupted him.

“Understood.” Nathan looked determined.

Two days after they left, there was still no sign of her. They checked the hotel and her condo. She had checked out that day that I called and that was the last the hotel had seen of her. I laid down the last plank on the deck and nailed it in. It was a little after three in the afternoon and I was getting ready to call it quits.

“Cal,” Alfredo called out to me from the living room.

I held up my hand to signal him to wait while I finished the last two sections I needed to nail in.

“Sorry, Alfredo, what can I help you with?” I asked, getting up and walking to him.

“We’ve finished with the bathrooms, backsplash, and the tile in the mudroom.” He laid out his list of the things I needed him to do. “Should we get started on the primary bath?”

“Nah, Alfredo, save it for tomorrow. Pack up so you guys can get home at a decent hour. I’ll make sure you get paid for the full day.”

“We can start…”

I held my hand up. “Alfredo, go home. You guys have been great, and we are ahead of schedule.”

“You sure?” he looked a little relieved. I know they had been putting in a lot of hours and they need to get home to rest.

“I’m positive. Go, thank you for all the hard work you’ve been doing. We appreciate you,” I said, wiping my forehead.
