I shook my head and walked to the living room. I sat down in front of the tray, grabbing my sandwich, and digging in. Aiden sat next to me, also picking up his sandwich and took a huge bite out of it. Nathan stood in front of us, looking wrecked. Guilt made my stomach sour, and I almost put my sandwich down.
“So?” He held his arm by his chest.
“Eat,” I said, taking another bite.
“Where the fuck is she,” he snapped.
“You need to eat.” Aiden looked up at him, and I knew it wasn’t just me who noticed that he was losing weight and muscle mass. His face was a little sharper, and even though he was sleeping a lot, he had dark circles under his eyes.
“I’m. Not. Hungry,” he said, through clenched teeth.
“I won’t tell you unless you start eating,” I said, trying to keep my cool.
“You can’t do that.” He looked at me like I was crazy.
“I can, and I will. You haven’t had a decent meal in a while, and you need it to make sure you’re able to heal properly.” I took another bite.
“A decent meal?” he laughed. “You couldn’t cook a decent meal to save your life, Cal.”
His comment stung, and even though I wanted to say something back, I knew he only said it because he was mad at me. “I know. It was this or PB & Js. I know how you feel about those.”
It was quiet for a few minutes, and I knew he was probably feeling like an ass, at least I hoped he was.
“You’re being stubborn, and he’s right. You need your strength to get better and you can’t survive off protein shakes.” Aiden looked up at him. “Just sit and eat so we can hear what he has to say.”
“She’s back in Dallas,” I said, throwing him a bone to entice him. I didn’t dare look at him, knowing he was fuming as we both had put him in this position.
“Fuck you, guys.” I saw him walking around the coffee table to sit by me. I noticed he left a bigger space than necessary. He looked at the sandwich like it was offending him. He grabbed it and took a bite, chewing slowly. I saw the moment his hunger kicked in, and he started eating ravenously.
“She’s staying at the same hotel we stayed at when we went to her brother’s wedding.” I finished my first sandwich and went for my second one.
“How do you know?” Nathan asked, with his mouth full.
“I called earlier and asked to speak to her. They transferred me to a room, but she didn’t answer,” I said, in between bites.
“So, you didn’t speak to her?” Nathan asked.
I could feel his judgment already. “No, I didn’t, but…”
