“We were just talking about her going to Dallas, when this one,” I said, pointing at Cal. “Said something about us not staying together for long.” I notice Evan get into his car giving us space, but one look at his face told me he got the gist of what had happened.
Nathan tried to turn around to say something to him, losing his balance. I tried to catch him, but he fell to the ground with a groan.
I sighed, helping him up. “Come on, Nathan, we need to get you looked at by a doctor.”
“Fine, but we are going to Jane’s afterward,” he grumbled, as we walked to the truck.
“I have to go check on Kelsey,” Cal said, walking back into the house. I looked at him for a second.
“I knew he didn’t mean for her to hear that. Cal was expressing his fears. You know, he expects everyone to disappoint him,” I said, helping him into the truck.
“I think we all expect it. I just wish she hadn’t heard that, especially in this situation.” Nathan looked defeated.
“It’s ok man, we will make her see what we were trying to say, and that Cal was just expressing what he fears.” I closed the door and then hopped in the driver’s side. I wasn’t a man who believed in religion, but I sent up a prayer, wishing or whatever you want to call it, that she heard us out and everything would be ok.
Three days later
It was Monday afternoon. We had gone to her house every day, and she hadn’t been there. Cal even slept in his car, waiting for her to come home. We had texted and when those went unanswered, we called and left voicemails. Every day we hadn’t heard from her, made me more nervous that we would not get a chance to explain. It was all just a big misunderstanding.
Today had been the hardest. All day I’ve felt like something bad was going to happen, I’ve been on alert waiting for something to go wrong. I didn’t go to work hoping that possibly Jane might just walk through the door and give us a chance to explain ourselves. I didn’t know if staying home was a good thing or a bad thing because now, I had all this time to worry about everything.
I knocked on the door to Nathan’s room to check in on him. “Hey, how are you feeling?”
