“Then we tell her she needs to go to Dallas for a little and then, what?” I asked. At this rate I wouldn’t be surprised if he did something to Jane just to spite Cal, or to make sure Cal didn’t fall out of line again.

“She can’t…She can’t come to our...fights,” Nathan slurred.

“I don’t think keeping her away from going to the fight is going to do anything,” Cal said, irritated.

“I don’t think it will either,” I replied, feeling like anything we did was going to be wrong.

“She…needs…honesty.” Nathan sounded worse. I hoped it was just his lack of sleep and the trauma he went through instead of his brain bleeding. Goddammit.

This week was going great until this shit with Lucio. He’s been pretty stable for the past year, but something has changed in him recently, and it’s making him do rash things. Exhaling forcefully, I felt all this tension weighing down on my body. I pulled up to the house as the sky was turning pink. We had been up all night and getting home already made me feel better.

“We are here, man,” Cal said, as I got out of the truck. I opened our front door, signaling Tango to stay put before I helped Cal get Nathan. He had gotten him out of the truck and almost to the door before I could help them. Nathan was looking a little more alert, but I knew we weren’t out of the woods yet. We got him to the living room before I heard a knock and the door opening.

“Jane?” I called out, as we put Nathan on the sofa.

“It’s just me.” Evan walked into the living room.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” Cal snarled.

“I just wanted to make sure no one was following you; if you’re going to take him somewhere you better do it now before he sends someone to watch over you guys.” Evan held his hands up showing he wasn’t a threat.

“Aww Evan, you do love me.” Nathan tried to make light of the situation, but Cal and I were still wary.

“Only you, Nathan, don’t know if you guys will share me,” he joked.

Cal and I stood staring at him. I didn’t want to make another mistake and get fucked over by not being cautious enough. His chuckle quickly stopped dead when he saw we weren’t amused.

“Guys, he’s fine.” Nathan tried to sit up but failed, and Callum had to help him up. “You know he’s stuck in a shit situation, too.”

We all knew why Evan was working for Lucio. He saved his sister’s life. Now he was indebted to Lucio for who knows how long over the money he needed for his sister’s cancer treatment. That didn’t mean shit to me now.
