Callum scowl was firmly in place now. “I’m feeling a lot better,” he said, looking over at Jane.

“Callum, I told you. Let your body heal slowly. If not, you could end up even worse off.” Jane continued to scold him as I got up for seconds. Good thing Jane always cooked like she was expecting company. I heard a buzzing by the sink, noticing Jane’s phone lighting up. The name George was on the screen, and I went back to the table to give it to her and sat down to enjoy my food. Her brows furrowed when she saw the name but before she could answer it, the call ended.

“You ok, darling?” Nathan asked Jane.

“Yeah, I’m fine. I just have some paperwork that my lawyer needs me to do, and they’re the last items for his will and estate.” She bit her lip, looking uncomfortable. “I’ve been putting it off, but I need to do it before the year is…” she didn’t finish her sentence as she stared off into the distance, then went back to eating.

We waited a minute, giving her the time she needed. We ate in silence, waiting for her to say something. I never liked to push her where Henry and the baby were concerned, but I was getting nervous.

“Baby, you ok?” I had to ask.

She looked up at me with tears in her eyes. “I…” She didn’t finish her sentence before she looked away from us. “I just realized their anniversary is next month.” Her voice was hoarse with emotion.

Fuck. I knew the first anniversary was always the hardest. I remember Nathan the first year after Natalie. I don’t think he was sober for an entire week. Dread formed in my chest, thinking about how she would cope with their death. I knew I had to talk to the guys about it to make sure we did everything we could to be there for her. I didn’t even know what she wanted to do.

Was it appropriate to be there with her, or did we let her do it by herself? I needed to remember to ask her what she wanted from us. I would take her cues and follow her requests.

“I’m sorry, darling,” Nathan grabbed her hand. “I know the first year is the hardest, but we will be here for you in whatever capacity you need us to be.”

Jane took a deep breath, looking at each of us with tears in her eyes. One slipped out, and she gave a small smile. “Thank you. I’m so grateful for you guys.”

“Anything you need, you let us know, ok, Jane?” I said, making sure she could hear the sincerity in my voice.

“We will follow your lead, ok, babe,” Callum added.
