“I just know the town we live in might seem safe, but I know the devil who plays the board, and I’d be an idiot to trust him.” His gravelly voice brought shivers down my spine.

“How well do you know him?” I knew he might not answer me, but I thought I’d give it a try.

He brought his gaze back to me. “More than I’d like to admit and not by choice. I just want you to know you should be careful.”

“Is it too late for Callum?” I had to know.

He looked back at Callum, who was sitting on a stool looking uncomfortable. He didn’t want to stay home alone, and I knew he was dying to do something other than stay home and rest.

“Honestly, I don’t think Lucio will ever be ready to give Cal up, but I know he is wary of all of them together. I think he knows there is nothing they wouldn’t do for each other.” He leaned against the wall, still looking around.

“Thank you for being honest with me. I don’t like when people think I can’t handle the truth.” I took a sip of my drink.

“You ever need the truth, you can always ask me. I hate liars.” The venom in his voice was startling. “You always deserve the truth, don’t ever forget that, Jane.” His vivid eyes stared back at me, and I almost felt uncomfortable with the intensity.

“You trying to steal our girl, Dev?” Aiden slung an arm over my shoulders.

“You know she’s not an object you can claim.” Dev sounded defensive for me.

“You’re right, she’s not an object we can claim, but she is more than welcome to claim anything of mine as hers because I want to give her everything. I want everyone to know we are everything she needs.” He kissed my temple and butterflies flew in my stomach.

Dev looked between us, and just a small flicker of emotion crossed his face. Longing?

“Jane?” I quickly looked behind Dev, seeing Daniel with a beer.

“Daniel,” Aiden said, before I had a chance to saw anything. I wanted to roll my eyes at him.

“Hi Daniel,” I said, smiling at him, hoping to ease the tension.

He looked between Dev and Aiden, looking like he couldn’t decide what he wanted to say.

“Babe, can you get me another beer, please?” I looked up at Aiden, hoping he would get the hint to leave.

He narrowed his eyes at me before he kissed me. “Come on, Dev, let’s get you a beer too.”

They left, leaving Daniel and I to stare at each other awkwardly.

“Have...”

“I…”

We both started to say something at the same time and then laughed.

“Look, I just want to say I’m sorry,” Daniel spoke first. “I’ve been an ass, and that’s not fair to you.”
