Shit. She’d asked him a question, hadn’t she? “I’m, ah…getting into your drawers next,” he blurted out. When her eyes widened, he realized what he’d said. Damn it. “No, I…mean I’m looking at your drawers.” Oh man. That didn’t sound any better. “Ah, your cabinets. I’m going to rummage through your cabinets and drawers so we can go over your diet.” He exhaled a hard breath and resisted the urge to punch himself in the face.

“Oh. Okay, then,” she said, heading out of the bathroom and toward the tiny kitchen.

Shaking his head in complete and utter disgust, Adam followed behind her until they stood in the kitchen together. She pulled open her cabinet doors and drawers, showing him where she stored her dry food and canned goods, and he immediately pulled everything out and set it on the countertop. He’d never seen so much unhealthy food in a kitchen before.

That was about to change.

He sorted through her cabinets, her refrigerator, and then her freezer, removing all the junk food he could find. He could tell whenever it was something Preslee liked because she flinched as if he’d reared back to slap her. But the only assault he committed was on her kitchen, and she stood on the sidelines watching as he continued to violate the place thoroughly.

Anything unhealthy that was open was tossed into the trash, while everything that was brand new and sealed in its original container, he placed into plastic grocery bags in order to donate it to a food pantry. There was no sense in wasting perfectly good food. Healthy or unhealthy. Not when people in need could use it and would appreciate it.

Once the food was finally sorted, Adam put the healthier items back into her cabinets and closed the doors. Only about a third of her groceries remained, and since he’d figured that would happen, he had planned ahead.

Adam strolled over to the plastic grocery bag that he’d left on her small dining room table when he’d arrived. “I didn’t want you to hate me for throwing out all the good stuff, so I brought you something that you might like.”

Interest gleamed in her eyes. “What is it?”

Adam pulled out a large white container. “Do you like protein shakes?”

Preslee shrugged. “Yeah. I mean, they’re okay. I’ve had worse things in my mouth.”

He blinked. Had the woman really just said that? Surely she wasn’t referring to…

Within seconds, the realization of what she’d said dawned on her, manifesting in blushing cheeks and a fit of giggles. She cringed, slapping one hand over her mouth. “Oops. That wasn’t what I meant.”

A laugh rumbled from his throat. Man, she was adorable. “It’s okay. I knew that.” Sort of.

“Ignore my dirty mouth,” she said, still laughing.
