Still, she at least had a slight chance with Josh, which was much more than she could say about Adam. Yeah, he was devastatingly handsome and took her breath away whenever he moved closer or turned that dark, piercing gaze on her. But she wasn’t silly enough to believe that a guy like Adam would ever date a woman like her. Even if she did have a pretty face, great hair, and a fun personality.
No, Adam was in a completely different realm than Josh, and those two worlds should never collide. Ever.
She glanced up as Josh approached the desk with an outstretched hand. “Hey, Adam. How’s it going? I didn’t expect to run into you here.”
Preslee’s stomach twisted. Adam and Josh know each other?
Oh no.

Adam shook Josh’s hand. “It’s going well, man. Good to see you,” he said, settling back into a more comfortable stance. “What are you doing here—looking to buy something?”
Josh shook his head. “Nah, I work here.”
“Oh yeah. That’s right,” Adam said, recalling a conversation he’d had with Josh the week before when he’d run into him at the gym. “You said you had a new job delivering furniture. Guess this is it.”
“Yeah, it’s temporary though. Preslee’s dad hired me to help out while he’s recuperating from surgery.”
Adam’s gaze swung to her, unease spiraling through him. “I’m sorry to hear that. Is your dad okay?”
He didn’t know why, but she hesitated and glanced back and forth between them before answering. “Um, yeah. My dad, uh…broke his wrist when he fell off a ladder…ah, in the storeroom.” Her uneven voice shook, and her eyes darted to Josh once more and then back to Adam as she fidgeted in her seat. “But he’s…fine now. Just not happy, um, that he can’t use his wrist or go back to work.” She cleared her throat.
Adam sensed something was off, though he wasn’t sure what. “You all right?” he asked, worry cascading through him.
“Of course,” she replied, nervously tapping her fingers on the desk. Her voice pitched higher. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
His brow rose. He might not know Preslee well, but the woman apparently couldn’t lie worth a damn. She’d been fine a minute ago. Up until something had thrown her. What the hell had changed?
Josh must not have noticed her weird behavior because he started droning on about how many sets of something or another he had done during his last workout. Adam didn’t know because he wasn’t really listening. His mind was too focused on what had caused the sudden change in Preslee’s demeanor.
