God. She was so going to regret this.
The darkened dance floor was lit only by strobe lights, and the music hammered so loud in her ears that it vibrated into her chest. Something hot and all-encompassing simmered in the air around them, as if the atmosphere was sensually charged.
She reveled in the pleasure of him against her, which in turn had her batting away thoughts of the two of them turning into anything more. He was just helping her with Josh, damn it. It was all for his benefit. She needed to remember that.
But the flood of thoughts wouldn’t stop coming. Images bounced in her head of her and Adam as a couple, taunting and teasing her mercilessly. It was a cruel thing to do to herself. Mostly because that dream would never come true.
By the time he’d led her off the dance floor and returned her to the bar area where Josh waited with her drink, her knees were as weak as limp noodles. But it wasn’t because of the dancing.
Adam offered her a smile, the one she’d always found so sexy, and said, “Thanks for the dance, sweetheart. I enjoyed it.”
Her cheeks warmed at the way he was looking at her, even if she did know it was him just putting on a show for Josh. Still, she somehow managed a smile. “Same here.”
“Good. We’ll have to dance again when another fast song comes on.” Adam winked at her before meandering away.
She put her hand to her chest and gasped a little as her shoulders slumped forward. It was as if her body was so weak that she couldn’t even hold herself upright.
Josh gazed at her. “Are you okay?”
“Yes,” she lied.
But she wasn’t okay. She couldn’t seem to catch her breath, although that had nothing to do with dancing either. It was Adam. Well, that and the fact that she’d just realized that she’d fallen head over heels in love with the wrong guy.

Adam leaned back in his chair and huffed out a breath.
“You all right, buddy?” Kurt asked, a note of concern in his voice.
“Yeah, why?”
Kurt grinned. “Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because you’ve been shooting daggers at Josh with your eyes for the past ten minutes. Every time he so much as touches Preslee or gets too close to her, you growl under your breath like a territorial male dog.”
Yeah, well, maybe he was feeling territorial. But it wasn’t all his fault. The way Preslee had shimmied against him while they were dancing had caused the circulation in his brain to go haywire. His entire body ached relentlessly.
