“It’s okay. She probably won’t believe you anyway. It could just make things worse. She’ll think you’re covering for me.”

Kurt sighed. “Things can’t get much worse, can they?”

“True,” Adam agreed, his mind reeling. “All right. See if she’ll listen. But hurry. I want you to make sure she’s okay.”

Kurt jumped over the counter and jogged out the front entrance. Adam prayed that he would catch her before she made it to her car. But would she even talk to him? Lord knows that Adam hadn’t been able to get her to listen. Served him right though. The whole bet thing had been stupid from the start.

As he waited, Adam stared at the counter, seriously contemplating smashing his head into it. It had only been a couple of minutes, but not knowing what was going on outside was driving him insane.

Kurt returned moments later with a weird, almost somber expression. One that made Adam’s gut roil with dread. Had she brushed him off too? Of course she had. She had every right to do so after what they’d done. How were they going to get out of this mess they’d created? “Tell me,” he said, hanging his head. “How bad is it?”

Kurt cringed. “Bad, man. Real bad.”

Great. “Let me guess. She didn’t want to talk to you either?”

“No, I didn’t actually talk to her.”

Confusion swarmed in Adam’s head. “Then what happened? She drove off before you caught her?” Kurt shook his head but didn’t speak. Instead, he swallowed audibly and hesitated. “Damn it, Kurt. Tell me what happened.”

He let out a hard breath. “She, uh, sort of ran into Josh in the parking lot before I got outside. And he…well, he asked her out to dinner.”

“What?” Surprised, Adam rubbed a hand over his face. “After all this time,” he said, shaking his head in disbelief. “The idiot couldn’t see how great she was back when she was single and trying to get his attention. But now that we are together, the guy wants to chase after my woman? I don’t think so.”

Kurt frowned. “Eh, buddy…”

Adam waved him off. “Yeah, yeah, I know. We aren’t together right now, therefore she isn’t technically my woman. But I’m going to rectify that.”

“Um, yeah. Well, good luck with that. Because your woman just accepted a date with another man.”

Chapter Twenty

Preslee glanced over at the man sitting across from her and downed her third glass of water as if it were a vodka shot that just happened to be in a large glass.

Josh pushed his glass of ice water toward her. “Thirsty?” he said, commenting on her sudden drinking problem.
