Josh grinned. “You’re spacing out on me, man. I asked you what you were doing here.”
“Oh, sorry. I’m just, uh…shopping.” Damn. He almost forgot what his lame excuse had been for stopping by. “My mom’s birthday is coming up,” he said, a surge of guilt rushing through him.
Adam regretted lying to Preslee about knowing where she worked. It definitely wasn’t the best way to start off a working relationship between a trainer and his newest client. Then again, she still hadn’t agreed to work with him. Yet. But, either way, it wasn’t like he could tell her that he got her personal information from the new member form she’d filled out at the gym. There was probably something illegal, or at the very least unethical, about doing so.
He didn’t want to come across as desperate, but damn it, he had been. She’d left that night before he could talk to her, and he’d needed to find her. Pronto. Not only because he loved his job and didn’t want to lose his business, but because the last thing he wanted was to admit to his family that he couldn’t hack it as a trainer, much less a business owner.
At the moment, it didn’t look like he had much of a choice since Preslee wasn’t interested. At least not in anything he had to offer. Adam lifted his head and followed her relentless gaze back to Josh. Bet she wouldn’t have told him no.
Wait a minute. That errant thought gave him an idea. Not necessarily a good one, but he was desperate. Maybe what Preslee needed to accept his offer was the proper motivation. It was kind of an underhanded move on his part, but it wasn’t like he was forcing her to say yes. She would do that on her own. Well, probably.
Time to find out.
Adam cleared his throat. “So, Josh, did you know Preslee joined the gym a few days ago?”
Her eyes widened, and her head snapped to Adam so fast and with such force that he was surprised it hadn’t kept going around in a circle on her shoulders.
Josh smiled. “No,” he said, turning his focus onto her. “That’s terrific. The Body Shop is the best gym around. Maybe we should all meet up and work out together.”
Panic flashed in her blue eyes, and she squirmed. “Oh, I, um…”
Adam folded his arms across his chest. “Ah, well, that won’t really be possible. You see, Preslee has decided to—”
“Hire Adam as my personal trainer,” she blurted out, cutting off his words. Her eyes probed his helplessly as a weak smile stretched her lips. “Right, Adam?”
