He grinned. Yeah, he’d thought Josh might change her mind. “Uh, yep. That’s right,” Adam said, playing along. “Preslee hired me today. I’m excited to start working with her.” Well, at least that much was true. “Unfortunately, though, since we’ll be doing one-on-one sessions, she won’t be available to meet up with you for a workout.” Preslee scowled at him so he sighed and quickly added, “Not yet anyway.”

Josh shrugged. “That’s cool. I’m sure we’ll still run into each other. When do you guys start working out?”

Adam gazed at her. “Great question.” One he desperately needed Preslee to answer. Because the last thing he wanted was her to back out on him the moment Mr. Motivation walked away. “How about tomorrow?”

She shook her head. “I can’t. I work until five. That’s when the shop closes.”

“No problem. I’ll meet you here at five. I’m happy to work around your schedule. Besides, we have some preliminary stuff to get out of the way before we begin the actual workouts.”

Her eyes narrowed again, but she didn’t say anything. She couldn’t. Not unless she wanted Josh to know that she’d quit the gym and wasn’t planning to work out with Adam at all. Judging by the way she kept silent, she clearly didn’t want that to happen.

Josh glanced at his watch. “Well, I guess I better leave you two and go eat lunch. My break is almost over, and I’ve got some deliveries to make this afternoon before I clock out.”

“See you around,” Adam told him, although Preslee only smiled her goodbye. Then he turned his head and watched as Josh headed toward a back room. When Adam turned back to face Preslee, the smile had slid off her face. Anger lit her vibrant blue eyes, and one brow rose in question as she crossed her arms. Unease twisted in his gut, but he shrugged innocently. “What?”

Gritting her teeth, she leaned over and pinched him. Hard.

“Ow,” he said, peering at the small red mark forming on his arm. “What the hell was that for?”

She straightened in her chair and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “For telling Josh that I quit the gym.”

“But I didn’t—”

“Only because I stopped you,” she said angrily. “You were going to say it. Out loud. Right in front of him.”

Damn straight he was. Because he was counting on her stopping him and used her attraction to Josh to his advantage. But he couldn’t tell her that. “What’s the big deal? You did quit the gym, remember?”

She sighed. “Yeah, but I didn’t want Josh to know. Now he thinks you’re training me.”
