Adam released a hard breath. “Look, I don’t like that you felt uncomfortable in my gym. I would love the chance to prove to you that you do belong there. Anyone who walks through that door does. But the only way I can do that is by getting you to come back.”
Oh. Okay, that made sense. Sort of. And he did seem sincere. But she still didn’t understand why he would be willing to give away his valuable training time to help her. Then again, the guy was all about fitness. One look at his hard, muscular body would convince anyone of that.
Maybe it bothered him to see someone like her, who was completely out of shape, not doing anything to improve their health. Was that why he offered to train her for free? Because he wanted to entice her into accepting his offer because he felt sorry for her and was looking at her like some kind of charity case. Oh God! That was it, wasn’t it?
She glanced back at him, and his deep-set eyes softened.
Of course it was. It was just like him to do so. He’d already proven what a nice guy he was. Like the other night when he’d tried to take the blame for her bumping into him. And he’d been the only one to come to her rescue when the machine had gone crazy. Now he was going out of his way and offering to help her again. The guy was clearly suffering from a severe case of white knight syndrome.
Which was kind of sweet, if you asked her.
Not that it mattered though. The last thing she wanted was a smokin’ hot personal trainer who looked like a Greek god standing over her while she sweated like a pig and panted like a braying donkey. “Thanks for the offer, Adam. It’s nice of you. But no thanks.”
He blinked, as if he hadn’t expected her to refuse him. “Why?”
“Because it’s for the best. I’m not comfortable at the gym, and I don’t think that’s going to change.”
“You won’t know unless you try. Give it a shot.”
She shook her head. “I don’t think so.”
“Okay,” he said, although the look on his face said otherwise. “You sure there’s nothing I can do to change your mind?”
Strange. She hadn’t expected him to look so disappointed. “No, sorry. But I really do appreciate it. It means a lot.”
Before Adam could respond, the bells on the entrance door chimed once more, and Josh strolled inside, looking just as good coming as he did going earlier. While he was definitely no Adam Caldwell, Josh was likely more in her wheelhouse and closer to the type of guys she’d dated in the past. Not that any of those relationships had worked out in her favor. Oh well.
