Frustrated, Adam lifted the beer he’d abandoned on the bar and downed the rest of the contents in one large gulp. If he was going to have to sit here all evening, watching her moon over Josh, then he was going to have to do it with a buzz. That was the only way he was going to get through this night with his ego unscathed.

Kurt clapped him on the back. “You okay?”

“Yeah. Why do you ask?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because you went from smiling to scowling in a matter of seconds.” He nodded toward Preslee. “I’m guessing you have a thing for her.”

“No, I don’t.”

Kurt grinned. “That’s cute.”

“What is?”

His grin broadened. “You denying it.”

“She’s my client,” Adam reminded Kurt, as well as himself. “So no. While I think she’s beautiful, I’m not interested in Preslee.”

“Liar. That gal is on your hit list, and you know it.”

Adam blinked. “My what list?”

Kurt chuckled. “A hit list refers to a list of women you’d like to hit the sheets with.”

Adam shook his head and laughed. What kind of stupid, sexist bullshit was that? “What are you—a teenager? I haven’t talked like that about a woman in years. Shouldn’t have even done it back then, but I was young and stupid at the time. Thank God I grew out of that.”

“Says who?”

Adam ignored his friend’s playful jab. “Ya know, I never took you for the sexist type. At least you’ve never been in the past. But I’m guessing you have one of these so-called hit lists?”

“Hell, no,” Kurt said, shaking his head adamantly. “I overheard my teenage nephew talking on the phone to one of his buddies about how he had a ‘hit it and quit it’ list under his mattress with all the names of the girls in his class that he’d like to sleep with. I just didn’t mention the ‘quit it’ part because it’s such a dick thing to say. Honestly, the whole list thing is the stupidest shit I’ve ever heard.”

Adam agreed. “Did you tell him that?”

“No, I let his momma tell him that. The moment I told my sister what the list was for and where it was located, she marched up to his room to give him a firm lesson about respecting women.”

Adam chuckled. “Like I said, young and dumb.”

Kurt shrugged. “Yeah. But be honest, Adam. Say you did have a list of women you’d like to sleep with…” He lifted his beer bottle to his lips, tipped it back, and then swallowed. “Would Preslee be at the top of that list?”
