“No,” Adam said, his tone serious. He gazed across the room at Preslee and decided it was time to quit lying to Kurt, as well as himself. “She’d be the only damn woman on it.”
Kurt laughed. “Thought you said you weren’t interested?”
“Shut up.”
His buddy chuckled again. “Damn, man. I reckoned you had a thing for her, but I didn’t realize you had it that bad. What are you going to do?”
“Nothing. Like I said, she’s my client. I don’t date anyone who I have a business relationship with. Besides, Preslee’s interest lies with Josh, not me. I walked up on a conversation between her and her friends yesterday where they were talking about Josh and how he’s not showing interest in her. Personally, I think the guy is a moron for that, but he’s what she wants. She’s already made it perfectly clear that we’re just friends.”
“That sucks.”
Adam ran a hand through his hair, tousling the strands. “Yeah, but it doesn’t matter. Even if there was something between us, there are other things to consider. Like the bet we made.”
Kurt shrugged. “It was just a harmless bet between friends. It’s nothing.”
Adam lifted one shoulder. “Maybe. But I don’t think Preslee would feel the same. After all, it was her workouts that we were betting on. The more I think about it, the more I feel like we crossed a line. Not intentionally, I guess, but that doesn’t change the fact that we did.”
“Well, you only have eight weeks to go before the final weigh-in. After that, the bet will be over, and she won’t be your client anymore. Since Josh isn’t showing any interest, maybe then you could slide in there and—”
“No,” Adam said, shaking his head. The last thing he needed was to get his hopes up. Especially after he’d heard her talking about Josh yesterday. “I don’t think so.”
They sat in silence while Adam continued to stare across the room at Preslee. Then Kurt finally said, “Well, you can’t just sit here watching her from afar all night like a damn hawk on a telephone pole who just spotted a field mouse.”
“What else am I supposed to do?”
“Go over and talk to her.”
Adam’s brows drew together. “Why? So I can watch her flirt with Josh some more? No thanks. I’d rather find a dark corner to loiter in, console myself with beer, and drink myself into oblivion.”
“Well, that’s a healthy attitude,” Kurt said with a groan.
“You’ve got a better idea? If so, I’d love to hear it.”
