“It’s no big deal. I’ll get to hang out with them all tomorrow anyway.” He rubbed his chin. “The reception is still at Bottoms Up, right?”
“Yes. The wedding ceremony will take place at the church at six o’clock tomorrow evening and then the reception will follow immediately after at the bar.”
“Good. That gives Kurt plenty of time to close up the gym in the afternoon and then get dressed and to the church on time.”
“Perfect.”
“Yeah.” His gaze swept over her and confusion settled onto his features. “Wait a minute. Why are you in your workout clothes? I thought you said you were attending a bachelorette party?”
Preslee grinned. “We are. The women are all working out together and then heading over to that new spa that opened recently to get manicures, pedicures, and massages. Who knows? Maybe even a few brave souls will get something waxed.”
“Sounds like fun,” Adam said, chuckling.
“I’m sure it will be. They’re a fun group to hang out with. And the best part about it?” She pointed to the eight women chatting with Kurt. “I held up my end of the bargain.”
Confusion flashed in his eyes. “What do you mean?”
“I brought in some new members. That was part of our agreement, remember? You help me with Josh, and I help promote your gym.”
“Oh. Right. I remember.”
“Good. Because I heard he’s supposed to be at the reception tomorrow. I thought maybe we could, you know…try out more of what you suggested.” Heat bloomed in her cheeks. “The flirting, I mean.”
Adam’s brow rose. “You want me to flirt with you at the reception?”
She bit into her bottom lip. “Um, yeah. I think your plan is working. I’ve noticed that Josh has become more attentive toward me. So I thought we’d up the stakes a little since we’d be in a social setting. Like maybe you could dance with me or something. Just to see if Josh responds to it.”
His mouth set in a firm line as his jaw tightened. “Okay. If that’s what you want.”
She hesitated. “Um, it is.”
“Great,” Adam said, although his gravelly tone and the look in his intense eyes said something else entirely. “Well, that’s perfect. Thanks for bringing in some new members. I better go help get them all registered so that you can get in a workout and then get on with your bachelorette party.” He didn’t wait for a response. He just walked away.
Preslee watched in confusion as Adam marched stiffly across the room toward the front desk. What the hell was that? She wasn’t sure, but whatever it was had stunned her senseless. Why had he been so curt with her? Had she upset him?
And, if so, what the heck did she do?
