  39. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I looked behind me and saw Puca still in the little hallway, watching us walk into the middle. Dullahan lifted his fingers to his mouth and whistled. The noise was lost in the wind but I saw an inky pit of tar and lightning burning ten feet in front of us. A horse crawled out of the pit, its mane violently whipping in the gales. It threw its head back and a screech erupted over the deafening storm.

I covered my face from a gust and when I looked again the horse was Dullahan’s bike, sitting in wait for us. He pulled me towards it and I gripped his shirt tighter.

“What are you thinking!” I wailed but he couldn’t hear me, dragging me over to the massive motorcycle. Black bones glistened with slickness. My mind spun, trying to figure out how we were supposed to get off the roof of a hundred story building. Dullahan settled me in front of him on the bike, his arms sliding around me as he gripped the bars and gave them a twist. I felt the engine vibrate between our legs but couldn't hear its normal roar over the storm.

I was dripping wet and practically deaf and blind from the madness of this hurricane.

Dullahan kicked off and revved the bike with a brutal twist that made us jump from zero to thirty in a second flat. We headed straight for the edge of the building, our speed only growing.

“Fuck!” I screamed, scrambling to find some way to hold on tighter. My mind was spinning, trying to figure out what trick he was playing. If Puca was somehow going to help us or if his fucking bike could fly.

We got to the edge and flew off. I sucked in a breath, feeling weightless for a moment as my stomach lifted into my throat. Dullahan suddenly leaned forward, bending me in half over the bars. I gasped, clutching the bars, my eyes wide as we tipped forward. Sparks of adrenaline raced across my body, burning under my skin as we started to fall head first. The wheels touched the side of my building as we fell.

I looked behind us and saw flames shooting up behind the wheels of Dullahan’s bike as we took purchase on the side of the building and raced down. It was a ninety-degree angle of madness taking us frantically down to the fast approaching street but Dullahan seemed unconcerned, his knuckles white on the bars as he kept forcing the bike to increase its speed more and more.

A wail of glee burst from inside me as I felt the adrenaline eating me alive. We rode the side of the building as the typhoon wailed and screamed, its winds making the front wheel sometimes go crooked before Dullahan righted it again. The tension inside me built and built until I felt I couldn’t take it. Tears were in my eyes and a smile stretched over my face. I didn’t even care I had no luck, this was everything. I’d never felt more alive.
