We were currently the three most wanted supernaturals in the world. We held the top three spots on the Council’s hit list. They wanted to clean house and we were the first ones they wanted gone. Too sinister and strong for their liking. Too evil. Too unhinged.
Maybe we could handle the Council’s hitman--whoever they sent. But maybe wasn’t really that great of odds when gambling with your life. Which is why we were here in this city, obsessed over a woman who had all the luck. Old kings used to use the same tactic in war. No wonder leprechauns were a dying breed.
I replayed the surprise that flashed in her gaze when I showed her my glowing golden eyes. I sucked back a sip of the warm alcohol as I recalled her green ones, burning with life so intensely they almost glowed too. I must have missed something because Dullahan snapped in my face, making me huff and shoot him a look.
“The boy is going to be a honey pot,” he grumbled, eyeing Lorcan.
“Can the boy not talk for himself?” I asked, looking at the incubus. The sad lot of us couldn’t pass for human if we tried. I tossed my sunglasses on the table in front of me. The dim golden glow from my eyes reflected in the glass as I brought it up to my mouth.
Lorcan’s gaze flipped to me and I swallowed, feeling the desire to lean in closer and run my fingers over the bumps of his knuckles perched on the table. His power was intense, overwhelming, and affected everyone. Which made him too dangerous to live. According to the council at least.
“I won’t fail like you did,” he said with a smooth voice that reminded me of the burning, rich liquid sliding down my throat. “I’ll seduce her and then feed enough to put her asleep for a while.”
“Oh, I’m sure you will,” I said with a smirk, imagining them together. I wondered what it would be like to live inside Lacey’s skin as it happened. To feel the brutal, burning attention of an incubus obsessed. Would I resist, if I were Lacey? Or would I welcome him courageously? Would I beg for him inside me?
It had been a long time since I took a female form. My eyes flipped to Dullahan and Lorcan. These two didn’t know the full details of what I had planned. That was my little secret to hoard. They thought we were just detaining Lacey but I’d been aiming to steal a leprechaun’s body for centuries. I wanted a taste of their luck.
“What does that mean?” Lorcan snapped in sudden agitation, his red eyes burning. I heaved a sigh and looked at the Dullahan.
“He’s unhinged,” I commented as if Lorcan wasn’t in the room.
“I can control myself,” he said between his teeth as he brushed at the sleeves of his button-up in agitation.
“That’s the problem, isn’t it? You control yourself too much,” I countered. Lorcan was practically insane. No, actually I was quite certain he was entirely insane. It simmered under his ironed shirts and routines. His control was thin fabric stretched taut over the unhinged demon begging to come out.
