- ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Chloe’s eyes widened, and Evie detected a small smirk in them, despite her mouth remaining still.
‘An affair? No. I can assure you, Evie, it’s nothing like that. Can I come in and explain?’ Chloe said.
Evie hated the way she used her name. So familiar. As if they had known each other for years. ‘Well, then, how do you know Hugo?’
‘I think it’s best if I come in.’
Evie looked Chloe up and down, racking her brain for an explanation as to why Chloe might be so desperate to speak to her. Did she even want to hear what this woman had to say? And did she want this, frankly, quite rude person entering her home, without discussing it with Hugo first?
‘Look, I think it’s best if you come back when Hugo’s here. He’s in—’
‘Italy. I know.’
Wait. Could Chloe be a stalker? A fangirl who had taken things a little too far? Evie knew that in the future, once Hugo starred in Henrietta, he had more than his fair share of ‘dedicated’ fans. But she didn’t think it would happen so early. Before he had even starred in the film.
‘If I could just come in for a minute, I’ll explain.’
‘Sorry, I really have to run. Bye!’ Evie said suddenly, slamming the door in Chloe’s face and sinking down to the floor.
That evening, Evie sat on the couch with her laptop balanced on her knees. She typed every combination she could think of with the words ‘Hugo Hearst and Chloe’ into Google, but of course, nothing useful appeared. As soon as Chloe had left her doorstep, Evie had felt a tightness in her chest. What could Chloe be so desperate to get in touch with Hugo about? Her eyes had seemed to dilate in a familiar way when she uttered his name. Could she be lying about the affair? Evie shut down the thought quickly, shovelling some chocolate-covered popcorn into her mouth.
Hugo was loving and caring and doting. And on top of that, when would he have had the time to squeeze another woman into his life at the moment? He was barely in London as it was! But still, Evie couldn’t deny that nagging feeling that told her something wasn’t quite as it seemed.
This is ridiculous, she thought to herself. Just call him and ask! She had been avoiding Hugo all evening. She knew that he would be cooped up in his room, working furiously on the screenplay. She didn’t want to bother him, she told herself. Or, did she not want to be confronted with some awful truth about who Chloe really was?
Evie leaned over and grabbed her phone from the coffee table in front of her.
Evie: Hey. I know you’re working, but something weird happened earlier today. I’m a bit freaked out. Can we FaceTime? x
