  52. ABOUT THE AUTHORS

‘The number one kiss of all time, from any movie ever, is … Bridget Jones and Mark Darcy kissing in the snow at the end of Bridget Jones’s Diary. She’s in her knickers, he’s looking as handsome as ever. They kiss as Van Morrison’s “Someone Like You” plays in the background, which, in my humble opinion, is just the perfect song. Plus, the kiss is romantic, it’s sweet, it’s not too over-the-top, and it always gives me butterflies,’ Evie said dreamily. ‘Some of you may know that it’s actually filmed just near the Globe Tavern in Borough Market, where Bridget’s one-bedroom flat was. How she could afford that place, god knows. But, picturing those two love birds getting off never fails to cheer me up,’ Evie said, remembering all the times she’d watched the film following an argument with a boyfriend or when she’d felt at a loss with her career or just life in general.

‘And there you have it, listeners of Pasta La Vista, lovers of films and carbs, the top five kisses of all time, as ranked by an expert on tonsil tennis,’ Ben said seriously. He held a straight face until they’d switched off their mics, then they both burst out laughing.

Later that evening, despite finally having been able to live out her podcast dreams, Evie returned home feeling a kind of heaviness. And it wasn’t just the one and a half bowls of creamy gnocchi weighing her down.

Peeling off her clothes and pulling on the silk kimono gown Hugo had brought back from his last trip to Italy, Evie slipped into bed and curled up under the covers. Their super-king bed felt enormous when she was alone; the empty space stretching out on either side of her seemed to mock her. Feeling unusually nostalgic about the early days of their relationship, she’d tried calling Hugo on her way home, but it was still too early in LA.

Evie got up and found her worn copy of Henrietta’s Gift on the bookshelf, then returned to their bed, fluffed the pillows behind her and settled back against the headboard. She’d nearly finished her third re-read, trying to re-familiarise herself with every word so she could continue to help Hugo with his adaptation.
