There were limited places for Fugate to go once he made that turn into the building. Hed trapped himself like a rat in a maze. Either Danielle would corner him or hed emerge from the lower level entrance on the east side of the building.
Morgan jabbed his finger at that back entrance on the blueprint and turned to the foreman. Is there a way through the outer fencing from here? Or would he have to come back this way to get off the property?
The foreman looked at him blankly. What?
Morgan gritted his teeth and just barely kept himself from grabbing the man from the shoulders and shaking him. The outer fencing. Is there another way out besides the main entrance?
Yeah, but youd have to have a key. The blank look remained.
Does Fugate have one?
Sure. All the employees"
Morgan didnt wait to hear the rest of the mans words. If Fugate had a key, he could duck out one of the back entrances and Danielle might lose him. Morgan took off running, heading toward the southwest corner of the building. Looking up, he thought he saw a flash of orange moving fast. Hed been right about the direction Fugate would have to go.
The cacophony of the building site made it nearly impossible for him to keep track of where Danielle and Fugate were by noise, but then he heard someone shout to look out. It had to be them. Morgan kept going.
He ducked beneath a girder hanging from a crane and rounded the first corner, nearly running into a pile of cement blocks. He skidded around them, scraping up against them as he went. Someone shouted for him to watch it, but there was no time to check behind him. There were fewer obstacles on this side of the building, but hed lost precious moments scanning the blueprint. He increased his pace, leaping over a stack of wooden slats.
Stop! FBI! Danielles yell echoed out of the concrete and steel structure. Fugate was headed this way. Morgan was sure. His instincts had been right.
He rounded the next corner and twisted his way through piles of steel girders, stacks of drywall, and sacks of concrete. There was an open area ahead of him. It had to be the back entrance. Twisting around a forklift, he ran straight at it.
And found Don Fugate running straight at him. Morgan stopped dead in Fugates path.
A look of confusion crossed the mans face for a second, but only for a second. Then he shifted to go around Morgan.
That second of hesitation was all Danielle needed, though. She grabbed his arm and in a quick fluid motion had Fugate down on his knees in the dust. Chest heaving, she said, Don Fugate, you are under arrest for violating parole.
Morgan bent over, hands on thighs, to catch his breath.
You okay? Danielle asked as she snapped the cuffs on Fugate.
