She left Morgan in the observation area and returned a few minutes later with some file folders and a notepad. She went into the interview room and sat with her back toward Morgan. In a minute or two, the two agents led Hutton in and handcuffed him to the table.
Need anything else, Agent Hernandez? the tall one asked.
No. Thanks, Hedley. I appreciate the assist.
Anytime. The agent left, shutting the door behind him.
Mr. Hutton, where were you on Wednesday night between ten and midnight? Danielle asked.
Good. She was getting right to it.
Hutton looked confused. What? When?
Wednesday. Between ten and midnight. Surely you remember where you were, Mr. Hutton. It was only two nights ago.
Huttons feet were tapping under the table. Two nights ago? He looked up at the ceiling, then snapped his fingers. That was my night at the soup kitchen. Over on Second Street.
Danielles head tilted a bit. Anybody who could verify that?
Hutton sat back. Rachelle Goodson. Shes the pastor there. We worked together until after 11. We stop serving at 10, but theres lots of clean-up to do and prep for the next morning, too. Im not sure what time I left, but it was pretty late.
And you were with the pastor the whole time? Danielles shoulders slumped a bit.
She stepped out now and then to talk to someone privately, but there were other people there working. And the clients, of course. Hutton had stopped tapping his toes.
Names, please.
He listed off five people. Danielle jotted their names down in her notebook as he spoke. When he was done, she looked up from her notes. Talk to me about Lexa Windham, now.
Hutton threw up his hands. I dont know who that is or why youre asking me about her.
Dr. Windham was the doctor in the Emergency Department who ordered the blood test that was the basis of why they took your daughter away from you, Mr. Hutton. Does her name ring a bell now?
Oh, her. Hutton looked down at his hands. I got pretty mouthy that night, I guess.
You did. You threatened her. Danielle sat back in her chair.
Hutton made a face. I should apologize to her, try to make amends. In the end, she did me a favor. Im clean now and working the program to stay that way. If I can keep it up, Ill get visitation rights back and Ill be able to spend time with Ellie again. I had to hit my rock bottom and having them take my little girl away from me that night was it.
Morgan leaned in. Was this guy for real?
You wont be able to apologize to Dr. Windham. She was murdered two nights ago. Danielles delivery was deadpan, which only made the impact of her words greater.
