The man who answered the door had gray hair pulled up into a man bun on top of his head and a pair of glasses perched on his nose. His skin was a little darker than Danielles and he wore jeans and a Henley. May I help you?

Danielle showed him her badge. FBI. We were hoping to talk to Cole Hutton.

The mans eyebrows went up. Hes not here right now. Hes at work.

Danielle shook her head. Im afraid not.

The man opened the door wider. Youd better come in.

Once they were inside, he stuck out his hand. My names Emilio. Im the house manager. Is Cole in trouble?

Danielle shook his hand. Not yet. We just have a few questions. Any idea where hed be if he isnt at work?

Emilio leaned against the wooden banister of the stairway, looking back and forth between Danielle and Morgan. No. Not really. The clients arent supposed to hang around the house during the day. We expect them to be out working or looking for work, taking classes. Something. He paused for a second. Do you want to see his room?

Danielle took a step back. We dont have a warrant.

Emilio shrugged. One of the conditions of living here is that you give up an expectation of privacy. Your room can be searched at any time. We can ask them to do a drug test at any time, too.

Morgan was ready to bound up the stairs to take a look, but Danielle was clearly more reluctant. We could look from the doorway, he suggested. Just see if theres anything that could point us to where he might be.

Okay then. She nodded her assent.

Emilio led them up the stairs to the second floor. There were four bedrooms on that floor. Emilio pulled out a set of keys and led them to the first one on the right. This is Coles room. His cell phone rang and he glanced at it. I need to take this. Ill be right back. He walked down the hall to the stairs.

Morgan stuck his head into the room. It was fairly large. It held a full-sized bed, a bureau with a small television on top of it, a desk, and an arm chair. Nothing was new or all that trendy, but it was clean. The bed was made. A stack of mail sat on the desk next to a neat stack of popsicle sticks. There was a bottle of glue next to that. There was a bulletin board over the desk with notes and photos stuck to it. Morgan squinted from across the room.

Coupons for pizza delivery, a flyer about a special assembly at Sycamore Lane Elementary School, a photo of a little girl. Okay, Mr. Hutton. Youre not here and youre not at work. Where are you? He looked over at Danielle. What do you think?
