- CHAPTER THIRTY ONE
In his office, Morgan started up his computer and got settled behind his desk. This wasnt going to be easy or straightforward. First, hed have to make a list of cases Lexa had worked on. Hed work backward from Vincenzo Rohr. Shed been working with him for three months. Hed start there and see if Michelles name turned up on any of the lab reports.
He plunged into the list of cases and then through the reams of paperwork that came with each one. There were plenty of lab tests that had been run. It was standard protocol to test blood and urine from every patient when trying to make a diagnosis. Every patient he and Lexa had treated had those. Then there were specialized tests. Biopsies and tissue samples. The list was long.
He couldnt find a single case that Lexa had worked on with him that had Michelles name on the lab work. That didnt necessarily mean that Michelle hadnt run any of the lab tests involved in those cases. The techs name doesnt always appear on a test.
None of the cases Lexa had worked with him had turned out poorly, either, though. It had to be something where a case had gone wrong somehow. Why kill someone over them healing you or someone you loved? That made no sense.
He snorted. How much sense would the twisted mind behind all this make anyway?
He shut down that search and started another, checking Lexas cases before she came onto his rotation. There was a soft knock at his door. Come in.
Ahmed opened the door slightly and peeked in. Im leaving for the day, Dr. Stark. Is there anything I can get you before I go?
Morgan glanced at the clock on his computer. Hours had gone by already. He shook his head. No. Thank you, Reem. I appreciate it.
Reem withdrew, but paused before he shut the door. Im so sorry about Dr. Windham. She . . . she was wonderful to work with.
Morgan smiled. She was, wasnt she? Its a great loss.
Ahmed nodded and then left, pulling the door shut so quietly there almost wasnt a click. Morgan sighed and went back to his search.
Maybe it was a case that Lexa had worked on before shed started working with Morgan. Lexa had been a relatively new resident. Shed done only one rotation before coming to his department. Unluckily, it was the Emergency Department. That meant a lot of patients and a lot of tests to comb through. He got up from his desk, did some stretches and sat back down to work it through.
You didnt get through medical school, residency, and post-docs without developing an iron butt.
It was nearly ten oclock before Morgan felt he had a list to start with. Hed found five cases that Lexa had run point on that Michelle had also run tests for.
