Why did what she said about another woman being attacked ring a bell? Right. The newscast hed had on as background noise as hed sat in his apartment feeling sorry for himself. A flush of shame crept up his cheeks. How sadly self-indulgent hed been. Who cared about what was happening to his marriage while Lexa had been fighting for her life? Oh. I saw something on the news about that. What does it have to do with Lexa?

Hernandez gave him a tight-lipped smile. Thats exactly what were trying to figure out. She leaned forward, dark eyes boring into his. Did you have any kind of conflict with Lexa? Any reason youd want her out of the way.

Morgan shoved back in his chair so hard that he nearly toppled over backward. What? No! Absolutely not. Lexa is an amazing resident. One of the best and brightest Ive seen.

Now Hernandezs eyes narrowed. Dr. Stark, were you romantically involved with Lexa?

Seriously? Why was this where everyones minds went? Again, absolutely not. Shes my resident. I enjoy working with her. She . . . she reminds me of my sister.

Hernandez made a note on her legal pad. Okay, then. What about other people at the hospital? Is there anybody who was jealous of Lexa? Anyone she locked horns with?

Morgan wracked his brains. Had he seen Lexa arguing with anyone? No. Shed generally been too busy to get into pissing matches with anyone. Look. The medical field is competitive. Theres a chance theres someone out there who resents Lexa for the spot she got in the program, but not enough to harm her. What would be the point of that? It doesnt make sense.

Youd be surprised how little sense violence makes sometimes. Hernandez sighed. What about patients? Anybody angry with Lexa about their treatment? Its a possibility that the attacker could be someone Lexa encountered while performing her duties at the hospital.

Morgan shook his head again. No. Nothing that I can think of.

Hernandez made another note on her pad and then slipped it back into her briefcase. She pulled out his cell phone, wallet, and keys and pushed them across the table to him. Well, thank you for your time, Dr. Stark. If you think of anything, please give me a call. She rose.

Agent Hernandez? Morgan asked.

Yes?

How is Lexa? Where did they take her? I want to check on her progress. It would be touch and go, but Lexa was strong. Strong and smart. Shed be okay. She had to be okay. He couldnt allow himself to entertain any other possibility.

Hernandez sat back down and folded her hands in front of her. No ones told you?

No. Every time I ask a question Im told that theyre the ones who get to do that. He could hear the frustration and resentment in his voice.
