  19. About the Author

JENNIFER: Oh, I know. The poor man. And he was all dressed up. He looked so proud to be eating at a restaurant. It was probably from an infection in the respiratory tract.

BOB: You know a lot.

PONY: What did he yell? I know, I keep asking questions.

JENNIFER: I think it was something to Hannah. His wife’s name is Hannah.

BOB: It was just a lot of yelling.

PONY: It was like when John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln.

BOB (Agreeing quickly and completely): Yes, it was.

JOHN: Oh, yeah— so, Pony’s taking a class.

PONY: Two.

JENNIFER: In what?

PONY: The Civil War and one in Theology.

JENNIFER: Theology, wow.

PONY: I know. It’s stupid, but I really like it.

BOB: That’s a hard subject. Make sure you study. Moses. Zeus. Am I saying that right? “Zeus.” It sounds weird. People took him really seriously, though. “Dear Zeus, please help me with my illness. Please give me a long life on your wonderful planet.” You know?

JOHN: Dear Zeus, (He lifts up the doggie bag—) please bless this food which— (—and the bottom of the bag gives way and all the food comes out) fuck.

JENNIFER: That’s all right.

JOHN: The bag got all soggy. I’m sorry.

JENNIFER: It’s fine.

BOB: Yeah, just leave it. Someone’ll get that.

PONY: But, so, when Booth shot Lincoln, you know, it says in history that he yelled “Sic Semper Tyrannis.” It’s right there in all the books. But no one who was actually there that night could agree on what he actually yelled.

JOHN: “Auugghh, my ankle.”

PONY: He broke his ankle when he jumped onto the stage.

JENNIFER: I just remembered this— wasn’t he treated by a doctor named Dr. Mudd?

PONY: Yeah, exactly. Dr. Mudd.

JOHN: It’s funny. You do something historical and you scream something important and then you run off and nobody knows what you screamed.

BOB (Chuckles): “Dr. Mudd.” I don’t think I’d go to a doctor named Dr. Mudd. Ah, maybe I would.

PONY: People were sitting right there, and they couldn’t tell you. In real life, it was probably just a bunch of yelling. Like with Elliot. It didn’t even sound like words.

BOB: I heard some words in there.

JENNIFER: Yeah. God, that was . . . I felt so happy to see him. And then all that. The poor waiters.

PONY (Brief pause): If they get all the big history stuff wrong, what’s anyone ever going to say about any of us?

JENNIFER: Maybe someone’ll say something.

JOHN: That’d be nice.

BOB: There’s so much crap in the world. Stupid crap and pain. (Brief pause) Now where was I going with that? Anyway, I just put it out to the group.

JENNIFER: You’re doing really well.
