BOB: I can see.
(The last muffled explosion of a firework.)
JENNIFER: Have you taken your stuff?
BOB: Can you remind me?
JENNIFER: Yeah. Come on out. (He comes out and stands by Jennifer) Do you want to sit? Do you want some wine?
BOB: I thought he said no alcohol.
JENNIFER: He just said moderation. (The music stops)
BOB: I should stop with coffee.
JENNIFER: That was so scary, Bob. The other morning.
BOB: That was pretty clumsy. (Brief pause) I know you’ve had to handle a lot. I’d do the same for you. You know that.
JENNIFER: I wouldn’t want the same. I’d probably want to know every, I mean, all the risks and names and details.
BOB: Well, we’re different. It just makes it easier.
JENNIFER (Brief pause): I think about you.
BOB: God, can we— I hate when you say stuff like that.
JENNIFER: I said I think about you. You hate that? It’s like the tiniest saddest little thing.
BOB: I’m sorry. Just, what am I supposed to say back?
JENNIFER: I don’t know. “I think about you.” There’s probably a million things. You just don’t have to yell at me.
BOB: I didn’t yell.
JENNIFER: I wish you would yell, sometimes.
BOB: Do you want me to yell or not yell?
JENNIFER: These are my two choices? (Brief pause) It’s like you even want me to be scared for you. It’s like you hate me because—
BOB (Interrupting): I said I hated . . . I’m sorry. (Very brief pause) It’ll be better when I go back to work. I can’t remember, when did he say?
JENNIFER: He didn’t. And I don’t think you should rush.
BOB: Well, I have to, sometime. (Brief pause) Are we okay?
JENNIFER: What? How?
BOB: I said I was sorry.
JENNIFER: That’s not, I don’t need you to say you’re sorry.
BOB: Okay. Now where are those fireworks?
JENNIFER: I don’t think we’re finished.
BOB: I’m just wondering if they’re going to start up again.
JENNIFER: I just think it’s important—
BOB (Interrupting): Seriously, Jen, it’s okay. We’re great, I promise. Can we just . . . (Brief pause) Thank you. I know you’re mad, but, thank you.
JENNIFER: Okay. I am mad.
BOB (Brief pause): There’s a lot of unsaid things between us. They’re there, they’re just unsaid.
JENNIFER: Is it good things?
BOB: Yes, it’s good things. It’s mostly really good things.
JENNIFER: I’m sorry if I get impatient.
BOB: No, it’s okay.
JENNIFER: I think I’m pretty patient.
BOB: Then why’d you apologize?
JENNIFER: Because I thought you’d say, “Don’t be crazy.” I thought you’d say that I was the most patient person in the world.
BOB: So, why not just say that? Instead of dragging me into it.
