He should have been a husk of a man at this very moment. He should be slack-jawed, consumed with love, willing to take her north and give her anything she might need. Had she been able to pin the assassin beneath her in her chambers, she would know where in Raascot Amaris was being held. She would know how to get there, the conditions of the girl’s life in the north, and what it would take to infiltrate and conduct a rescue mission with a northern escort to guide her way. Whether Amaris was tortured in a prison cell or happily married to a damned northern farmer, the point remained that she had been taken. Nox rarely let herself consider the latter option.
If they’d hurt her? There would be no hell prepared for the mangled bodies Nox would send into its fiery, sulfur pits. She had but one talent at her disposal. Her succubus power was meant to work in the night; it was a skill for behind closed doors, for the influence of time with a victim who was in her clutches one-on-one. And if she used it well, it was all she needed.
She eyed the blue vase once more, craving the satisfaction of hoisting it above her head and shattering it into ten thousand fragments at her feet. It symbolized her failure. It symbolized exactly what she would do to Amaris’s captors. And perhaps most importantly, it would feel really goddess-damned satisfying to break something.
She couldn’t bring herself to return to Priory just yet. It had been more than a week of travel by horseback to get to these lakeside knolls, and to have faced a swift and total defeat was demoralizing. Tonight, she would rest. Tomorrow, she would flex her seduction and work the men of Yelagin until she found at least one morsel of information to make her travels worthwhile.
She didn’t remember falling asleep.
She didn’t even remember lying down, and yet, clearly her rage-fueled pacing had come to an end.
She blinked awake, stiff from falling asleep in her clothes.
Nox had never been one to rise with the sun. As the years went on, she preferred to stir later and later. Especially now that she was both a lady and creature of the night, she would sleep until noon if circumstances allowed. She had paid for three nights at the inn upon arrival and had tipped handsomely for her privacy. No one disturbed her as she rested well into the late morning. The sun was bright and in her face through the suite’s window when she blinked her eyes open through a curtain of thick, black lashes.
