Nox deflated, clutching her handful of flaky gems until they bit into her hands. Only moments prior they’d had hands full of stars and bellies full of sunshine. She hadn’t meant to ruin it. She said, “They just want to keep you safe.”
Amaris was quiet for a long time. A small breeze picked up the silvery strands of her hair. It fluttered around her like a cloud before she turned back to Nox. Her frosted lashes remained lowered over her eyes as she told Nox she was ready to go back to the manor, her voice as damp as her spirits. Nox kicked herself internally. She hadn’t meant to spoil what little fun free time they had.
Amaris hadn’t waited for a response before scaling back down the tall, gray boulders.
Nox followed, her frown absorbing into her skin. She kept her eyes on her feet as they rounded the trees that crowded the far shore until they came upon a familiar, obnoxious voice.
“Look who it is!” Achard put his hands on his hips. Nox found Achard irritating on the best of days and worthy of being drowned in the pond on the worst of days. She briefly debated whether it would be worth it to get in the vile pond water if it meant holding his head under the surface.
She was no stranger to her temper. Emotion roiled through her, heating her cheeks and forcing her hands into fists. She opened her mouth to snap back when Amaris beat her to the punch.
“I’m sorry,” Amaris said. “It must be hard for you to see someone who has a friend who actually likes them.”
Nox wanted to laugh, but her body spiked with adrenaline. If Achard retaliated, she’d at least have an excuse to give him a black eye. The moment lingered between them as Achard stood on the muddy shore, slack-jawed and seething. Amaris returned a proud, defiant glare. It was rare that a matron saved the day, but a voice calling from the manor cut their altercation short. The standoff simmered for a moment as a matron’s voice called again, the children refusing to break eye contact.
“Knock it off” came the soft voice of the redheaded girl from over their shoulder.
Nox swallowed in surprise at who had spoken. It was rare to get a peep out of the sisters, and no one in Farleigh blamed them.
Their arrival had been memorable and traumatic for everyone.
