“Yeah, it sucks not having all the amenities close by, but I think all this is worth it.” I couldn’t take my eyes off the scenery and how lucky we were that Jane fell in love with this place, too. I couldn’t think of what would have happened to us if we hadn’t met her.

“I’m starving. Should we eat now or later?” Cal asked, and I laughed.

“Dude, it’s ten-thirty.” JD chuckled.

“Cal can eat all day, twenty-four seven, literally.” Nathan smiled, taking out a snack for Cal.

“Fuck, I remember those days,” Matthew said. “After thirty, it all goes downhill.”

“Shut up, you're thirty-three. You act like you’re forty,” said JD, as he punched Matthew.

I laughed. “Thirty isn’t too bad. I still feel good.”

“It’s coming for you JD,” Matthew laughed. “Next year is the big three zero.”

“Nate turns thirty next year too,” Cal smiled, and I knew it was because he was the baby of the group.

“Take that smug look off your face. You have three years to go, Cal, and we’ll all be in the same boat.” Nate rolled his eyes at him.

All of us teased Cal for being so young as we walked down the mountain towards the lake we all had agreed to fish at.

“You know, for a little while I was afraid of turning thirty, but now not so much,” JD looked thoughtfully to my left. “I think Katherine has changed that for me.”

“Love does that to you.” Matthew looked love-struck.

“I never thought I would get married. I thought I’d enjoy different girls all the time. Moving on to the next and never being tied down,” JD said as I looked at Cal and Nate. That sounded familiar. “Now I’m thinking of making babies with her and I can’t wait to see a little girl who looks like Katherine. Fuck, I’m a sap.” He shook his head, smiling like he couldn’t believe it.

“I hear a good woman does that to you.” Nate chimed in. “She makes everything better and shows you what you were missing out on.”

“Are you guys with anyone?” JD looked at Nathan and me. He looked at Callum. “I don’t want to hear about my sister. So don’t say anything that might tarnish her good girl image.”

Cal laughed, shaking his head.

“Nope, no one.” Nathan said, looking disappointed.

“Don’t think it will happen for me, either,” I said, feeling disappointed too. I didn’t know how this was going to work in the long run. From the looks of it, Callum would be her boyfriend to her family and we would just be friends? Fuck, this is one reason I didn’t want to date, because all of this was just complicated. It made me anxious.
