Preslee stared between the two men. Oh. Adam must’ve known Josh was on his way over. That was obviously why he’d looked at her that way. He’d promised to flirt with her to draw Josh’s attention. But while Adam had only been pretending for Josh’s benefit, unfortunately, it wasn’t only him who Adam had fooled.
She sighed. “Just great.”
* * *
Adam took a step back and blew out a breath. “Hey, Josh.”
He wasn’t certain where the guy had come from, but he was thankful Josh interrupted when he had. Adam had been so keenly focused on Preslee that there was no telling what had been about to come out of his mouth. And with the way she continued to stare at him with those mesmerizing blue eyes, she must’ve wondered the same.
But nothing good could come from saying it out loud.
Still, he couldn’t deny that he’d felt something in the moment. Something he had no business feeling. Not after knowing her only a week. And especially not after volunteering to help her attract another man.
Yeah, the reminder sucked. Preslee wasn’t into him. She wanted Josh. And Adam sure the hell didn’t want to be a stand-in for him. Even if she changed her mind and wanted to date Adam, it wouldn’t matter. She was still his client. Therefore, off-limits. There was no getting around that.
Why did he ever agree to help her with Josh in the first place?
Agree? It was your idea, idiot.
And too late to back out.
Adam ran a shaky hand through his hair. She had done her part by doing the video update. The least he could do was hold up his end of the bargain.
Josh smiled. “You two are getting along well, I see.”
Adam stepped closer and draped an arm over her shoulders. “Preslee’s great to work with. She’s so likable that it’s hard not to love everything about her.”
She turned her face up to his, and a deep shade of pink colored her cheeks. “Um, thanks.”
He winked flirtatiously. “You’re welcome.”
Josh cleared his throat. “Yeah, I know. I mean, I’ve technically worked with her longer than you.”
Although Adam didn’t think the comment was meant as a challenge, his chest automatically rose. As if he were a puffed-up rooster that had just realized there was another cock in the henhouse. “So I’ve heard.”
Preslee stiffened beneath his arm. “Uh, how was your day off, Josh?”
He smiled. “Just another day. Most of the time, I’d rather be hanging out at the shop. You know how much I like being around antiques.”
She returned his smile. “About as much as I do.”
Adam gritted his teeth and forced himself to say, “Looks like you two have one thing in common.”
Josh nodded. “Two, actually. We both work out.”
