As the video continued playing, Preslee cringed and sucked in a deep breath in an effort to calm herself, but the air refused to inflate her lungs. Her heart hammered relentlessly inside her chest, beating so fast that she thought it might actually explode.
Dear God. The whole awkward thing had been caught on video. It was all there for anyone to see. Her workout disaster with the possessed stair-climber. Adam coming to her rescue. Her lame attempts at flirting with him. And, the most discomforting part, him ignoring them.
Preslee wheezed out an uneasy breath. How was she ever going to show her face around town again? Judging from the number of comments, a whole slew of people had already seen the stupid video. And from what she could gather, according to the number of shares, a whole bunch more were about to.
Jeez. No wonder people referred to this as “going viral.” She felt sick to her stomach, like she was coming down with something. Sure, she could delete the post. But would it even matter at this point? The video had already been up for hours. Besides, someone out there had probably already copied it, and chances were good that they would somehow link it back to her. Then that would only make others think she was trying to hide it.
And they would be absolutely correct. Who in their right mind would want that kind of embarrassing stuff out there? She sure didn’t.
When the screen went black, Preslee hit play a second time, hoping to induce the heart attack that would surely come from seeing the horrendous debacle all over again. She couldn’t die from humiliation later if she was already dead, right?
But before her impending death took place, something had her pausing the video and staring in disbelief. Wait a minute. Was she imagining things or had Adam just…sniffed her? She backed the video up a little and played that part over again. He had! He had actually turned his head and smelled her hair. Either that or he had been checking her for dandruff. Which would be difficult since he’d closed his eyes.
But why would he sniff her? Had her hair smelled bad? Granted, she had worked up a pretty good sweat right before he’d stood behind her on the machine and showed her how to properly use it, but she had worn deodorant. And it wasn’t like Adam had crinkled his nose in disgust as if he had smelled a stench in the air.
Feeling self-conscious, Preslee grasped the end of her ponytail and pulled it around to her nose, giving it a good whiff. The scent of pineapples and coconut filled her nostrils. Okay, so the smell wasn’t the problem. Unless, of course, he just didn’t like pineapples or coconut. Maybe that was it. Then again, he did smile afterward. So obviously he—okay, stop already!
