“And if I fail?” Wait. Was he actually entertaining this stupid idea?
Kurt didn’t hesitate. “If you fail, then you have to let me buy into the gym as full partner for half the cost.”
Adam considered it for a moment and then shook his head. “This is dumb. We’re not making a bet.”
“Afraid you’ll lose?”
“Hardly,” Adam said, scoffing at the idea. “But there are some things you apparently haven’t considered. Such as, who’s to say that Preslee wants me to be her personal trainer? Or that she’ll stick to the training even if she does agree?”
Especially since the woman didn’t seem to want his help. When she’d first run into him and he’d offered her assistance, she’d turned him down flat. More than once. She had come across as nervous and uneasy around him. After all, he was a stranger. A big one, at that. At six feet, two inches, he towered over her. Not to mention that he was built like a tank.
His friend shrugged. “True. From the moment she first walked in, she looked like she was ready to bolt for the nearest exit. Hell, she still does,” he said as they both glanced her way again.
“She’s wary when it comes to the gym. Like she’s not comfortable in her own skin.”
Kurt nodded in agreement. “Yeah, but that isn’t my problem, Adam. It’s yours. Do you want to make the bet or not? Going once, going twice…”
Adam ran a hand through his hair. “You’re such an ass.”
Kurt smirked. “Maybe. But it’s still your move. What are you going to do?”
Adam wasn’t really sure. He’d never turned down a bet before and didn’t want to start now. But the thought of working with Preslee concerned him. All it would take would be one sprained ankle or some other minor injury, and any progress they made together would be completely derailed. And that was if he could even get her to agree to any of this to begin with.
After he’d saved her from the runaway stair-climber, she’d seemed more comfortable around him. Even went as far as to joke with him and tell him that he was a nice guy. But was that enough to convince Preslee to let him train her? He could definitely help her get fit if she would.
“How do we measure her success for the bet?”
“We’ll let Preslee determine that herself. But you can’t influence her decision. She sets her own fitness goals. As long as they’re safe, of course.”
Good. That was a given as far as Adam was concerned anyway. “All right,” he agreed. “But that doesn’t answer my first question. What if she doesn’t want to work out with me?”
