She buried her face into his warm male chest and sank into his arms, enjoying the sensation of him touching her once again. When she finally forced herself to pull back, their eyes met, and his gaze instantly heated, lingering on her lips. It sent a thrill coursing through her. The man still wanted her as much as ever. She could see it written all over his face.

His eyes softened, and he swallowed hard. “I’m sorry I screwed everything up between us. I…I’ve missed you.”

Her heart squeezed. The uncertainty in his voice bothered her though, and she decided it was time to put him out of his misery and let him know exactly how she felt. “I missed you too. That was my other reason for showing up here today. I have something I need to say to you.”

His body tensed, as if he was bracing himself. “Okay. Go ahead. Lord knows I deserve it.”

She smiled. “I want to pursue this thing between us.”

Adam stared fixedly at her, as if he didn’t know what to say. Clearly her words had taken him by surprise. “Do you mean it?”

“Yes.”

He gazed at her warily. “Are you sure? After what I did, I wouldn’t blame you if you never trusted me again.”

“Yes, I’m sure. I’ve never been more sure about something in my life. I need you, Adam. While getting fit has made me happy, I’ve never been happier than when I’ve been with you.”

His strong arm snaked around her waist and pulled her back into his chest, his mouth a breath away from hers. “Thank God. I thought I’d lost you.”

“I’m not going anywhere.”

“Me neither. But you need to know one more thing. I love you.”

She smiled at him. “I know. I got your messages. By the way, I love you too.”

“Then marry me.”

Whoa! Confusion and disbelief slammed into her so hard that her knees nearly buckled. Thankfully Adam tightened his grip on her and kept her upright. She hadn’t at all seen that one coming. Had he really asked her to marry him? “Do what?” She lifted her eyes to his and realized that he was just as surprised by the unexpected proposal as she was. “Y-you don’t mean that.”

For a moment, there was complete silence, as if Adam was rolling the idea around in his mind. Then he grinned. “Actually, I do.”

She shook her head. “No, you don’t. You were just as surprised as I was about what just came out of your mouth. I saw it in your eyes.”

“You’re right, I was. But just because I blurted it out doesn’t mean that I didn’t mean it. Actually, if you think about it, people tend to only blurt out the truth.”

Dear God. “No, Adam. We can’t—”
